Baby WC Eastern Collareds

lcfish10 Feb 12, 2008 05:08 PM

Hi again........
can anyone tell me is it typical for baby male collareds to grow faster than female collareds?
my first hatchling was the female and was a runt like her mother. The male hatched 12 hours later and was noticeably larger. As the first few months went by, they became about the same size and now 3 months later the male is twice her size in girth and about 2 inches longer. Both are still extremely active and eat quite a bit. The male does eat more for sure. I understand that males attain their maximum size in about 3 years, where the female grows her entire life. Whether that's right or not, I don't know that for sure. I was just curious if anyone had any knowledge of this growth thing. It just seemed a little odd to me that 2 lizards that were born 12 hours apart are become so different in size.
These babies were wild caught/captive hatched, so I don't have any idea how they will turn out.
If possible, I would like to know if ALL babies start out this aqua color with vivid white and black spots. My male is showing orange now around the collar. I am hoping to post a picture of the female and have someone here at the forum tell me which collared she is.
Thanks again for the help and keep those cool pictures coming in. Love those.
Take care

I have to say males just seem to be built stockier, bigger, not all, I do have some males who seem to stay small, but most males do look larger then the females, even from the same clutch, 12 hrs, apart, they can stay the same size for a while then as the male begins to mature a bit he fills out more, just the way they are programmed lol.

But as I said, some times some males stay small, or some females will become big mama's , lol .

The youngsters have amazing colors, and change so much so often, the colors you speak of are normal. The orange will come and go until they are yearlings.

I have some yellow heads born the same time, the females are 24g each, and the male is only 13g. He was the smallest at the time they were bought (from a private breeder), but I have some concerns about him, he has little frog legs and still looks a lot like a runt despite eating waxies regularly, and being very active most of the day. He eats as much as my girls do, and just doesnt seem to want to grow. I havent brumated him because of his weight.

Basically my biggest concern is the fact that at more than 6 months he is still so little, he was very depressed when I bought him but he snapped out of that after a few weeks, so I guess time will tell
