there is a permit system in NJ. A hobbyist permit is $10 per year for all your animals. Pythons are ok. Anacondas and venemous are illegal. There are some protected species, like cornsnakes. Only amelanistic types are permitted. There is no wild collecting allowed.
this link should help you out - http://www.nj.gov/dep/fgw/exotic_apps.htm#initial
On the application for the permit it says
"Your 20-day temporary permit receipt (pink slip) should be sent with this application. All permits will be denied if receipts are not provided."
Is this talking about a receipt for purchasing the animal? What if you got the animal more than 20 days ago?
Last year I finally got the proper permits (hobby and wholesale/dealer). I believe that the '20-day' permit pertains to NJ sales only. If you purchased the snake from a non-NJ source, then simply provide a receipt for the purchase. I don't think it matters what the date was as long as you identify the source. If you didn't get a receipt at the time of purchase, then track down whom you purchased the reptile from and get a receipt. Initially, this was an inconvenience simply because I had a lot of reptile show purchases and it took me months to eventually get all my receipts before sending in my permit applications. Also, make photocopies of everything before sending in your paperwork.
I admit that I was nervous about the whole thing simply b/c the process is not entirely clear but I think it really comes down to money & revenue for the NJDFW. I am a high school teacher and I've attended lots of NJDFW workshops...and have talked to a lot of NJDFW folks....and almost all of the money used for educational materials & programs comes directly from permit revenue. By the way, NJDFW offers some good field guides & other herp-related materials.
I recently renewed both permits and received them back within a very short time. I've never spoken to anyone at the NJDFW office. Lots of folks say that NJ is one of the toughest states but I think that NJ reptile laws aren’t too bad. I don’t agree with the law regarding corn snakes, but I follow it and only keep Snows, Albinos, Butters and Lavender corns. I have NO desire to own anything dangerous, such as venomous, crocs, extremely large constrictors, so restriction of those species does not concern me...and to be quite honest...not just anyone should be allowed to keep reptiles that are fatally dangerous.
Again, my experience with NJDFW thus far has been positive.
The list is on this page. The contact number and email are at the bottom of the page. Great question BF!
