half digested crickets

cacogen Aug 27, 2003 01:59 PM

i got home from work this morning and saw what look to be half digested crickets on the substrate. is it possible that he threwup? also i just put calci sand(which i'm going to change soon) in his tank and he seemed to just like the taste of this last night when i introduced it to him. could this have caused the problem?

It sounds as if the crickets were vomited. It can be caused from over eating or not basking long enough to digest. I sure hope it's not the Calci-sand blocking his system. If your dragon liked the taste of it, he is a prime candidtate for causing impaction. I'd get him off of it real fast.

thanks Christyj. i think he was only eating it because it was something new to him. he doesn't seem to be doing it today but i'll keep my eye on him. someone had sugested southdown/oolitic/sugar sized reef sand. do you have any ideas on this substrate?

No, sorry, never heard of it.
All we have in this area is Missouri/Missippi River mud sand..lol (j/k)

I wouldn't be alarmed unless he obviously swallows the calci-sand. It could be he was just getting familiar with his new substrate, using his tongue, like beardies do to recognise things. Or did you actually see him gobbling down the sand?

Having said that, I also agree with changing the calci-sand.
