Although I consider myself a scientist and understand the need for collected specimens as vouchers and aids in research it still hurts me to see rows and rows of "pickled" snakes. We visited the world acclaimed Butantan herpetological facility in Brasil last Spring and got a look at their collection. There were several hundred 8 foot tall, 30 foot long, 3 feet wide, multi-rack shelves with entire sections devoted to a single species. Literally tens of thousands of preserved snakes of a single species like common boas, drymarcon, milks, etc. The pituophis collection was fairly small consisting of a very old northern pine specimen, an annectans, and a gibsoni (all crammed into a single one gallon jar). Theses pitures do not even begin to express how huge this room was! Lots of dead snakes.

personally, i find museum collections fascinating. The majority of collections are loaded w/ tons of specimens that the old school naturalists collected. Many biologists prefer photographs these days, unless its an undescribed or whatnot. I'll pickle a roadkill now and then. nice pics, thanks for posting

Speaking of pickling, what's your recipie for pickled roadkilled snake? I tried pickling a RK Coachwhip, but the internals all turned black. This would give me yet another reason to stop for ropes, hoses, tire strips, and the odd bicycle inner tube...

Thanks.

Looks like a neat place to visit, although a little creepy.
More snakes in jars
