Well, some news from this evening. As most of you who know of me know, I have had my Tudehope male breeding my Dyer female for the past few months. Just over a month ago the breeding got really heavy and I was able to witness and film a few copulations. Over the past week there has been NO action at all. I haven't seen an ovulation or anything so I decided to see if adding Jason to the mix would cause a bit of competition and spark Mack into some more breeding.
.
Well, not 10 minutes after I put Jason in the cage with Mack and Jackie, MACK TRIED TO MOUNT JASON!!! Not just that but Jason was running and waving and GAPING at the cloaca ...This is not the response of a MALE but the typical response of a FEMALE!
.
Just some background.....Sometime last year I posted a delima in sexing this particular snake. Most of my males tend to probe around 10 subs deep (sometimes more). Most of my females about 3 or 4 and occasionally 5 deep. Well this snake was probing 7 on one side and 8 on the other (I have probed this snake multiple times). The post went on to ask opinions on this finding and they were just about evenly split on opinions as to male or female. Gotta give it to Gus Rentfro, he was the first to say (just from photos) that it looked like a female to him. Looks like he may have been right. Had I known I would have been feeding her more like a female and less like a male (she is about 4 feet as an early '05 but lean).
.
On a brighter note. The two keepers from my last litter are both "easily" males so that could help balance the collection. Also could you imagine a Narcissus X "Jason" (that name will have to change soon) litter? They should be ready at about the same time at this rate.
.
Oh well. Life throws curve balls sometimes. Thanks for listening to the long ramble.
