Start of Field Season in NW

RichardFHoyer Feb 14, 2008 12:14 PM

If there are any individuals on this forum site from western Oregon, Washington and northwestern Calif., the field season has commenced. This weekend should be ideal for finding a number of reptiles in that it is suppose to be mostly sunny with temperatures in the mid to high 50's.

Despite being on the cool side at 49 degrees yesterday, with the sun out I was able to find three adult male Rubber Boas and observed one S. All. Lizard and three W. Fence Lizards on a south facing slope.

Hey Richard. How did things ever wind up with you know what? I got caught up in a big case and lost track of a few things.

I'm way ahead of you. So far I've seen 2 boas, a rattler, a calking, a northern and southern al less than a thousand yards apart, and the obligatory ringnecks, slenders, arboreals, newts, skinks, fence lizards, etc. All were seen in two trips into Santa Cruz County. I took photos of some but have misplaced the cable thingy to put them on my computer. Oh, and a couple of sharptails. Lots of baby tarantulas too now that I think of it.

The one species I've yet to see, ever, is a coast horned lizard. The ones at the Pinnacles, which used to be as common as, well, dirt, are disappearing due to feral pigs.

I'm predicting the first zonata by the end of the month.

Regards, SA

Well SW British Columbia count as the NW right? well this is the earliest NW garter snake I ever saw was today. For Victoria the earliest I've seen before is March 5. But it's about 10 degrees celsius and sunny. Great finds and I wish I had some rubber boas!!

If the Northwestern Garters are out, then the Sharp-tailed Snakes on Vancouver Island should also have emeged by now as well.
