Feeding Hatchlings

PaHerper88 Feb 14, 2008 03:51 PM

So next year I'll be moving out of the regular dorms and (hopefully) the environmental mod at the environmental residence college with some friends. Since it's more out of the way, I'm hoping to try to get a snake in there to keep me company during the school year. If I were to decide on bringing a hatchling or two of the garter morph I posted earlier, my question is, what should I start them on? I've often caught and kept garters of various ages for a few months over the summer, and the only thing I've had hatchlings take willingly is earthworms. If I try to bring hatchlings, should I start them on supplemented worms, or try to get them on pinky parts right away?

That snake doesn't look like a morph...
I've seen a lot of specimens like that.

I'd start newborns off on worms/fish...
Eventually get them on rosy reds or guppies.
They'll grow faster.
And eventually offer them fish scented mouse tails until they're big enough for pinkies.

Man... I still think it looks cool.

All my newborns last season were easily started on rosey red minnows. They will do much better on a diet of roseys compared to worms (growth etc as stated above). I would try to get them eating pinky parts as soon as possibe though.

I have been keeping garters for years, Small "Rosy red" fish,
earthworms, garden slugs, little newts and salamanders work great also.

BTW Garters are live born, so hatchling is not the correct term, Newborn or neonate would be more appropriate.

Just helping out I hope...
