Some new colors in my colony???

rainbowsrus Feb 14, 2008 06:55 PM

Anybody know what to call this? Other than a nummy feeder rat I had three pop up in a recent litter, now about 4 weeks old.

and in a bucket with two similar looking brothers. I've had white ones with nose and base of tail brown but not seen one with this much color.

Then these showed up in cleaning this wek, were spread between two cages with two females each but I know I had shifted pinkies around after feeding several off so could all be from the same litter.

Could it be himilayan? They look different when young then their hair mostly lightens up when they get their adult coat.

I would say "BLUE POINT SIAMESE" but dirty, and not refined as much as a show rat.

Those are Siamese rats.

The hair color of Siamese, whether rats, cats or rabbits, is controlled by temperature - cooler bits (points) are darker. While your pinks were nursing, their heads were nice and warm under their mama's tummy, while their butts and tails were sticking out into the cold(er) air. As they mature and moult out, their torsos (warmer core temperature) will pale out, while their ears, noses, tails and feet (cooler) will darken some.
