Making a cage out of a room:

PhunkeyPhish Feb 15, 2008 04:36 AM

I'm moving in April and have decided this is a good time for me to get another iguana (had a big boy that I had to adopt out after going to college (now graduated)). I am planning on walling off 4 feet of my bedroom so the cage will be 4 feet deep by the width of the room wide (about 11 feet I think). I will then have the cage go up 7 feet leaving the last foot (8 foot ceilings about) for lighting. My plan is to frame the entire perimeter with some cross beings stretching from front to back. Thinking of three levels of these cross beings plus the floor and top. I'd like to leave the three sides exposed to the wall and use wood panelling on the 1st tier on the front. The 2nd and 3rd tier I'd like to use plexi glass. Then half the enclosure I will place a wood pannelling for the roof, and the other half I will use poultry fencing to allow for some circulation. Basically looking for any tips or suggestions from the crowd. My tiers are 3 feet, 2.5 feet, 1.5 feet. A small door measuring about 2 feet and 5.5 feet high.

I had a friend who made a pretty neat cage out of a sliding glass door that someone was throwing away. It was mounted in a corner so that two walls were the back of the cage, with the sliding glass door the entire front. The doors were mounted on top of a 4x4 across the bottom. It turned out very nice, but you have to live with someone who appreciates that sort of thing. I was very jealous of it!

Yeah I plan to construct the frame out of 4x4's and have some running from the rear to front of the cage for additional support, as well as a way to make a "jungle gym" for the ig to climb. I would like to frame it to the walls, but I am renting the house so figure I should construct 4 sides to prevent any damage to the walls. You're right about needing someone right to appreciate it. My girlfriend and our room mate both think I've lost it, luckily I have my own room in the house!

How about a big box that would be like a bunk bed, with your bed on top. Takes up the same amount of floor space, nah… nevermind.

Thats a sweet idea Upscale! Plus it would keep your bed warm all the time lol!

Well I hate bunk beds, and then you'd have to keep the lights inside the cage which I don't like the idea of. Lucky for me the room I get in the new house is about 3.5 feet longer than my current room. So, I'll only lose about 1/2 a foot of my original space. I'm planning the enclosure to be 11'x4' and 7' high. I'm so stoked. Construction begins in April... just in time for my tax return, and hopefully just before a stimulus package haha!

Sounds really awesome. How are you going to keep it humid enough without molding the walls? I guess youll have to paint them? I always wanted to make my closet into a cage but its stuffed full of junk now.

Yeah I thought about the humidity problem with the walls. So I decided to put up plexi glass on all the sides with the exception of a small strip near the top on the front side of the cage. This, along with the left and right side of the tops will be the only screen areas, for ventilation. The rest of the enclosure will be all plexi glass to keep the humidity in. I'll be sure to post LOTS of pics when I finally get it all together !
