Pueblan breeding size, brumation period

wvherp Feb 15, 2008 09:13 AM

I have an 06 male and 07 female, both apricots. The male may actually be ready to breed next year. But I must wait until my female is ready. I know there have been success with breeding Pueblans as early as 18 months but what is typical age and size for a breeder? Also, how long must you cool these snakes? Thanks

3 foot 3 years 300 grams...
no brumation needed... the all and powerfull frank retes put it best that animals only use brumation to survive inclimate weather. if they cant survive within a certain seasonal temp range they slow their bodies down and try and survive the bad weather.
its not needed at all to get most snakes to breed.

I've bred plenty of Pueblans at 18 months. I've bred males at 20 inches (and sometimes less). Usually I like females to be at least 28 inches. Pueblans are relatively small milks, many never reach three feet in length. I've always cooled my Pueblans, like I do my corns and other milks. For me they've been the first of my colubrids to lay eggs every year that I've bred them.

When do you normally begin the cooling process? How long?

tspuckler Feb 17, 2008 06:33 PM

I cool them from Thanksgiving to Valentine's Day. You can find a heck of a lot of good milk snake breeding information on Bob Applegate's website (listed on kingsnake.com's home page as "Applegate Reptiles" in the Breeder's section), where his book "The General Care and Maintenance of Milk Snakes" can be read online.

Good luck!

I downloaded the book about a year ago and misplaced it!! Gotta dig it out.
