New addition (image heavy, hehe)

Hollychan Feb 15, 2008 01:35 PM

Okay... I bite the bullet and bought another snake. I still miss my cali king immeasurably, but if I ever find her, I'll buy her a brand new tank. So... I bought this fella today. I haven't put him in his terrarium yet, but when I do, I'll post more pictures. I'm feeding him now, so far he's eaten three pinkies without blinking (lol). He's not even an aggressive feeder, he just licks his way over to the pinkie and swallows it up.

Anyway, let me know what you think of the little fella. I'll get better pictures later.

....right? I'm pretty certain, but since he seems to have more coloration and maybe more stripes than the Eastern kings in my books, I wasn't completely certain.

He's got a few too many bands to be an eastern..

Hollychan Feb 15, 2008 07:02 PM

Is that the general consensus then? I looked up the Florida kings and I can't find one that looks like him.

Maybe my pictures aren't as good as I thought. :/

Where's the experts when you need them? LOL I was wondering my self if it was a Florida king, but juvenile Speckled and Black kings also have that type of pattern.

FoxTurtle Feb 15, 2008 08:32 PM

I am THE expert.

FoxTurtle Feb 15, 2008 07:52 PM

Here's one that I caught that is similar:

Yours is definitely a Florida king.

thomas davis Feb 15, 2008 11:48 PM

I think my pictures didn't show his pattern/color very well, but in person he looks a lot like your first picture.

Believe it or not Holly, your King is pretty tough to nail down with absolute certainty. It could easily have some influence from a few other types in the getula complex, there are several pairing scenarios that could produce offspring that look like that. Varying percentages of one or the other can really be deceptive when it comes to identification. However, I did catch a floridana down in south Florida that did look very similar to yours, usually their cross-bands are more even across the back, and somewhat less random, but that's not to say that it CAN'T be a little aberrant either. Many subspecies of King also share the same typical ventral pattern as well, so that really doesn't prove too much one way or the other either.

Nice looking snake Holly, and it looks like it will have a long healthy life in your care,.....keep up the good work, and take some more good quality pics to post for us soon.

best regards, ~Doug

Thanks, I think he's a wonderful little snake and I'm going to be extra cautious about not letting him escape from the terrarium.

I also followed with my boyfriend's pattern of naming reptiles after serial killers, hehe. This little guy is now Eddie Gein.

Holly, you can't have a good snake collection without a "John Wayne Gacey" being added..LOL!

This guy was something else!

I've heard that named mentioned a lot, but I think that was before my time. I remember this guy back when I was a kid.

Richard Ramirez

This would be a good name for a MBK! lol

Steve_Craig Feb 17, 2008 10:14 AM

Ramirez was really a creepy looking guy. From what I remember he was saved by the police from an angry mob that was about to beat him to death. Also, I remember the hillside stranglers reign of terrer sometime during that time frame. They may have been earlier then Ramirez.

Hollychan Feb 17, 2008 09:29 AM

John Wayne Gacy (March 17, 1942 - May 10, 1994) also known as The Killer Clown, was an American serial killer.

He was convicted and later executed for the rape and murder of 33 boys and young men between 1972 and his arrest in 1978, 27 of whom he buried in a crawl space under the floor of his house, while others were found in nearby rivers. He became notorious as the "Killer Clown" because of the many block parties he threw for his friends and neighbors, entertaining children in a clown suit and makeup, under the name of "Pogo the Clown." He was also in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest sentence imposed on a mass murderer; he was given 21 consecutive life sentences and 12 death sentences.

Known as the "Killer Clown" eh? I'd have to use his name on a very colourful snake, maybe a tangerine albino milk. ^_^

This clown photo of him is REALLY creapy!...wow!

I'm just going to have to get him back out when he's done digesting those pinkies and take some more pictures. He didn't have anywhere near as much white on his belly as the pictures that Fox posted, and he's very close to the hatchling that Thomas posted. I know, I didn't buy him under ideal conditions, I should've bought him from someone who knew more about kingsnakes, but he's very healthy and I had watched him in that tank for a few months now. I was getting worried some little kid would convince his mommy he needed a snake and something would happen to the little guy.

Anyway, as far as the colors on him, he is very black and the lighter spots are definitely a cream color, not white, not yellow. He's a very nice snake, eats extremely well, and loves burrowing. I'm keeping him no matter what subspecies he is. ^_^

Okay, he came out earlier, so I grabbed my camera. Please help me identify what he is. I got a much better look at his belly this time, it looks like a chessboard. These pictures show his belly and his back, as he was wrapped around my hand. He even has a name now. ^_^

He's definitely black and cream color. I haven't been able to get a good look at a Florida kingsnake's belly to see if they have the chessboard pattern as well. And those spots that look white in the middle of the black scales, that's just the light reflecting. In the picture where he's further away, you can see how he's pretty solid between the stripes.

Does look like a Fl king now. You can get much better results if you photograph him outside during the day. Take pictures of him in the shade and in the sun with the flash on and off on other shots. Then you can pick out which ones look best. Your camera is not focusing in on the snake. It may be because your in the house and there is not enough light on him, even if it looks like there's enough light. Always be sure the macro mode is set to on, or it won't focus on the snake when you take shot's that close to it. The little simble for macro mode is a little flower.

Hollychan Feb 20, 2008 08:29 PM

He ate a fuzzy for me tonight. Other than having a little difficulty getting the legs in the right direction, it went down just fine and he was looking for more! I wasn't going to push it though, since this was his first fuzzy, ever. I'll make sure he digests it just fine before I feed him another one. I'm so proud of the little guy! ^_^
