Thats a very good question. I cant wait to see how everyone replies... sorry I cant really tell ya. I can tell ya I like them in this order best...Pines, Bulls, Gophers. I don't care to much for the gophers but Love the Pines.

I'm pretty sure scale counts, pattern and other physical characteristics help to differentiate one ssp from another. I also know there are size differences esp between the Gophers (my favorite Pits)and the Pines & Bulls, but aside from that, I'm no genetics/DNA expert, so I can't tell you much else. Good question.

Must be a slow day over on the python forum.........
I can't tell if you are serious or just yanking the collective chain for jollies.

There are a whole lot of simularities, hence these groups all belonging to the same Genus, and a whole bunch of subtle differences, hence the species and subspecific taxonomic divisions.

If you are really interested in getting answers to that question go online and order Olive Griffith-Stull's manuscript on the relationships of snakes in the Genus Pituophis. All of your questions will be answered!

Question for you. Do your really think the two snakes below look alike? Any more alike than lets say an indian and burmese python?

John I know you posted it before but I cant remember. What local is that bottom one from. Thanks, Randy

I got this Pamona CA locality annectans from a friend who was the curator of herps there at Cal poly as a hatchling back in 1999. I have been trying to pair her up with an orange male from the same area ever since.

Hey John;

That red annectans is a relatively uncommon occurrance. I have seen maybe 3 in hundreds of normals.

Why dontya try to breed it like a recessive? Make hets and breed back to founder.

I promise if I catch one it is a gift.

i haven't checked this forum in a while and i was looking to see if anyone answered my question and i saw your post and i'm writing you back to let you that my ques was dead serious and for whatever reason you got offended by my ques is beyond me and i think it's funny that you take snakes WAY!! too seriously that you would try and take shots at me hahaha. i'm a grown ass man why would i post a question to yank your chain for jollies as you put it, come on now. and to answer your question the pics you posted do look alike, they got the same exact head but just different colors and i've seen people post gophers bulls and pines that the same kind of pattern, that's why i asked the question in the first place and it seems to me you don't even know cuz you couldn't even tell me what the subtle differences are

You wrote...."i haven't checked this forum in a while and i was looking to see if anyone answered my question and i saw your post and i'm writing you back to let you that my ques was dead serious and for whatever reason you got offended by my ques is beyond me and i think it's funny that you take snakes WAY!!too seriously that you would try and take shots at me hahaha."

=I was of coarse in no way offended by your questions, and yeah, I enjoy herpetology and take it seriously at times. I am sorry if you felt that I "took shots" at you. Be honest your questions was a bit silly, "what's the difference, they all look alike to me". Although my answer may not have been what you wanted I simply directed you to a source that would help you explore the differences between the recognized taxa of this group.

You go one to write, "i'm a grown ass man why would i post a question to yank your chain for jollies as you put it, come on now."

=Well people get bored, who am I to suggest it has never happened? I apologize if I offened you by suggesting that you might be simply "prank posting" in an attempt to stir up some dumb pituophis nerds.

Your post above continues, "and to answer your question the pics you posted do look alike, they got the same exact head but just different colors and i've seen people post gophers bulls and pines that the same kind of pattern, that's why i asked the question in the first place and it seems to me you don't even know cuz you couldn't even tell me what the subtle differences are"

These three groups, the bulls, pines, and gophers, share many characteristics and differ in many ways as well. There are several fantastic references that I encourage you to review that will help you better understand the Genus Pituophis way better than I will be able to, so again if in fact you are serious, go get Olive Griffith Stull's manuscript on relationships of snakes in the Genus Pituophis. She lists all sorts of neat stuff like ranges, scale counts, saddle counts, patterns, rostral scale shapes, etc.

I hope you are able to find the answers to your ques, good luck!
