I just picked up a little cape male for $35 at a pet store. Ate well. Looked kind of sick when I got him so I was nervous but for $35 I feel it was worth it if he did ok. I gave him one pinky and he ate it, held it down for a week and is now feisty and active so I'm glad I got him.

Thanks

Congrats! I'd still quarantine him for a month or three. Nice snake, good luck with it

That's good advice although I would quarantine for 6 months if you cannot have a number of tests run to detect paramyxo virus, crypto, etc. A separate facility to quarantine is the best however another room in your house will do just make sure to work that animal on days you would not work the rest of your collection (or work it last to avoid possible cross contamination).

Great find!

Good Deal! Good to hear someone NOT getting over charged @ a pet store once in awhile ; )

That's probably not a bad idea. About 10 years ago I got something that killed off my entire collection. My tortoises, lizards and every last snake. Spent a nice chunk of change at the vets w/ some of them that held on long enough and they all died and no one knew why. Cleaned the room, all the cages and everything would still die, no matter where at in my house! I ended up moving out (it was at my parents house) so I was able to start fresh with new everything (couches, beds, furniture and home). So everything has been doing great. I should be more careful though.

Just picked up this new cage however, it appears to have been manufactured, I've never seen anything like it.

Thanks

what are gonna put in that? and how you gonna heat it? looks way cool though!

BlackPineSnake Feb 16, 2008 11:48 PM

Nate it's Clay. Went back to bps because I don't get e-mails from the linnyclay.

Anyway,

What am I gonna put in it? Well... I don't know, the sections are small, not big enough for any of my snakes now. The cape maybe but I'm not going to put him in a smaller cage ya know? I'm thinking geckos, maybe sand boas or something. I went into our local herp shop to get a new snake then saw this and had to get it instead. It is really nice. As far as heating it... i'm not sure about that yet. Any ideas??? I seen some heat-rope type stuff a while ago, the flex-watt would be ugly but if I can track the rope down (if it even exists...?) maybe fix it down both rear edges of the back.

I thought of you when I first saw this cage actually... I think it is intended to be laid down flat but all the doors function normally standing upright like this so it makes a good living room piece... it's just empty until I can find something worth getting...

Lol! I knew it was you.
I never even thought about the fact that it was made to sit with the screens as the tops wth? I would run it like that with a strip of flexwatt under the back and use it for hatchling pines when you have them. Or maybe a colony of anthill pythons, those snakes are definatley starting to get my attention.

On another note I'm not breeding the BP's this year as I'm moving up to Spokane this spring right about when I would have gravid snakes on my hands. I'm not to hurt about it they did good last year and can have a year off.

It's hard for me because each time I want to get something new I end up getting another pit. There are just so many out there I want! More people need to put some up for sale though...

I read that you are not going to breed your pines on an earlier thread. That's not a bad idea... Clyde might not like it but I'm sure Bonnie could deal.

We just moved down to Jacksonville left Critter Control now working for Terminix.

I am really sorry to hear about your misfortune in the past. However I am glad you mention it because many people I know personally think stories like yours are some sort of old wives tale. It can happen and it does happen. One bad animal brought into a collection CAN be lethal for the rest of your collection. I have had a few close calls. Iv'e heard people say things like oh yeah, I quarantined it for a week. This is pointless.
One year after Daytona I came home with snakes from 3 different breeders. I had those snakes separated in boxes for the drive home and then put the snakes from each breeder into a different room of my house....my wife was not thrilled.... but it was worth it as I had the peace of mind knowing they all were doing fine before putting them in my snake room.
The next year I bought snakes, from some very well respected people and I let my guard down. Things got weird in my snake room. After administering over 1000 doses of meds things got back to normal. It was a nightmare though.
Anyway I am glad to see you getting back into things and wish you the best of luck. Hopefully some people will read your post and think about the bad things that can come back home with you when you bring a new animal into your house.

John Cherry of Cherryville Farms told me about how he lost 1,100 animals from someone who brought a species of Pseudomonas bacteria into his collection. Thank goodness for the veterans who teach us how to be better keepers through their experiences, good or bad. Those guys have sacrificed a lot for our benefit.

I've heard of this happening but always thought it was just that an old wives tale. I talked with Clay and even then I still had my doubts, until I realized how paranoid he was about buying anything used and buying numerous new enclosures even when he has a good amount left over.
I'm glad I follow the standard qurantine procedures and have all my new animals checked by a vet. I couldn't imagine loosing all my animals let alone a thousand.
Definate thanks to the oldtimers for thier contributions.

Nice score. Amazing to see a cape so cheap at a pet shop.
