Brooks Kingsnake

hvnlyblueangel Feb 16, 2008 02:10 PM

Hi everyone, I am wondering if anyone knows anything about a Brooks Kingsnake, we are looking for a Florida but the store near us has a Brooks, from what they guy described to me over the phone is that he is the same coloring as the Florida but with more speckles of red. Does anyone know anything about them? I know I want the coloring of a Florida King so if this guy would stay this coloring as he grows I would love to get him, will he keep the coloring or will it morph with every shed? Any information on them would be great thanks! -Jamie

Not sure if you're looking for a Brooks Morph or just a "Brooks Phase" Floridana

But Check out this site: Floridana Morphs

maybe it'll help

I know I don't want a morph, I would like the black white orange/red speckling to stay life long, I will check out that site. What is the difference between the brooks morph and brooks coloring floridian? Sorry so many questions I thought I knew more, this whole brooks thing is many me feel dumb! -Jamie

Floridana are very diverse.

there are many different "looks" to them and they come in a variety of colors

White- "White Phase"

Yellow- "traditional" look

EXTREME Yellow- "Sulphur"

Green- "Green phase" (to some)

Orange-red- "Flames"

Brown- "Peanut Butter Hets" & Mahogany

The Morphs have TONS to looks to them... but since you aren't looking for one, the site may not help you any.

What about the care of the brooks? Is it the same as the Florida for temps and everything?

I think you are a little confused. a "Brooks" or "Brooksi" is a florida king. A few years ago they were considered a sub-species, but have since been placed back in to floridana. Some dedicated breeders have continued breeding them and still call them brooksi to identify their work, and the snakes bloodlines. Brooksi tend to have more red as hatchlings and a lighter color as an adult.

You said you don't want a morph because you want like the dark color with the red high lights. Neither a florida or a brooks will keep those colors into adulthood. They will tend to lighten up, and a nice brooks can look nothing like it did as a hatchling.

There are many breeders here that are WAY more knowledgeable then me, but I think what I said should give you an idea of what to expect.

A Brooksi IS a Florida King.
You should speak to people who work with them and get some pics of parents and babies produced by them before commiting to a purchase.
Some get better with age, others may get muddy brown and barely have any speckling or yellow other than a thin chin pattern.
The sub species name of Brooksi has not really been valid of 15 years or more? It's been a long time.
Now hobbyists mostly refer to the nicer yellow phase Florida Kings as Brooksi when initially it was meant to describe Kings from South Florida that had a few visual characteristics that set them apart from the darker Kings.
Some of us on here have quite a lot of these Kings and Brooksi, or even dark ugly Florida Kings make great pets. Though I personally focus on morphs I have many hets and those normal looking snakes are just as impressive as the morphs, and have a huge range of variants as far as colors go. Brooksi frickin rule!

When I bought my Florida king, the guy called her a flame brooksi. He also said she would stay the same color which I now know is a patently false statement that was made to make a sale. But I certainly don't care, this snake is a wonderful pet with just a perfect temperament. This is what she looked like when I got her, and what she looks like now...

I know I mentioned this a long time ago but my triple hets form Steve Osborne looked exactly like that when they were young adults.....they changed a bit more and went even darker but they're very nice snakes. ALl the morphs they throw sure are nice too. Tom Stevens
