Identity of this tortoise?

sharif Feb 17, 2008 08:36 AM

My mother recently came back from a vacation trip to Egypt. During her visit, she saw a tortoise walking in a tourist/souvenir store. The tortoise is owned by the owner of the store and claims the tortoise is 36 years old. The tortoise casually walks around the store and never leaves the door.

I examined the picture and I can't tell what species it is. I know for a fact its not a Testudo kleinmanni. I am not sure if its a Greek... although the one I had looked different.

Here are pictures:

That is what many call a Libyan graeca. Tesudo graeca from Libya. I think some are also calling it T. cyrenaica (because they are found in the Cyrenaica mountains in ne Libya. They seem to be quite common in the Egyptian markets.

I agree with EJ - definately a Libyan Greek. I have a 1.2 of Libyans. They are great tortoises but hard to come by in th U.S.
