new pastel, new questions

teaspoon Feb 17, 2008 12:30 PM

ok, so, I went to the Northern Virginia reptile expo on saturday and decided a minute befor I left to buy a gorgeous little pastel male(my first morph! and only $125!) He's beautifull and I named him Mogli. Anyway, while I was researching the trait, I noticed that most websites call Pastels "Jungle Pastels". and don't mention just pastels at all. Are they the same thing? And pastel is a co-dominate trait, right? My other question was because he bit me this morning. I know that that is not normal for a ball python. I had just washed my hands and then held some superworms before I had picked him up. I offered him a superworm, you never know what a snake might eat, but he didn't want it, so, question is, why would he have bitten me? I'm just curious what you all would say, thanks!

First of all, ball pythons DON'T eat super worms LOL.They eat rodents. As to why you were bitten, you say you just got it yesterday? It's best to set them up and leave them alone for a week or so to let them acclimate to their new surroundings. Don't bother it except to change out the water or clean up any mess it may leave. You need to realize that to this very small snake you appear to be a large predator and it may react out of fear when it sees you reach in to pick it up. The bites aren't fatal so there's no real worry

I didn'e expect it to eat the superworm, I just thought I'd let him check out. I'm trying not too bother him, but he's just sooo goregeous! I shall resist!so what is a jungle pastel? there are so many morphs, alot of which all look pretty similar.

Pastel refers to the colors, jungle is a pattern morph. You can have a jungle that is not pastel. NO MORE WORMS!! He should be fine in a week or so.

Pastel and Pastel Jungle are synonymous. Same morph.

I'm confused now. Is jungle the same pattern morph as a normal ball python?

In the beginning all pastels were called pastel jungles. Now they are just refered to as pastels. Most big breeders refer to "jungle" as being a very wild and unusual pattern. Pastels lack the browns and have more yellows and blushing. Some may disagree with this. It's kinda like enchi pastels. Enchis are not pastels, they are enchis. The same thing with cinnys. Some people call them cinnamon pastels, they are just cinnamons. I fell the same way with the pastel jungle, they are just pastels unless they have the wild jungle pattern.

Hi Teaspoon,.........I generally suggest 2-3 weeks or better of acclimation. Do not feed for at least a week. My Preference is to feed rat pinks or rat pups as first meals as they barely crawl around and are not likely to SCARE THE CRAP out of the snake. (make sure they are nice and warm as pinks do not hold heat well). Larger rats tend to be hyperactive and I have seen them scare the snake. Mice are OK but still ansty NOT as bad as rats. DO NOT leave live mice or any weaned or larger rats alone with your snake!!!. I also find that feeding in very low light (late evening to be best = more active snake and a better feeding response)....................On to the Pastel thing: Jungle Pastels ARE NOT Jungle Morph balls!!! Pastel Jungles refer to a particular pattern related to VPI's strain of pastels which tend to carry a certain characteristic of pattern but only linked to VPI. There are also Matrix/Matt Turner line Blonde pastels, Graziani pastels, NERD lemon Pastels, Bell Line pastels, and just pastels. Most have particular traits relative to the original imported lines. All of these are compatible CODOMINANT traits and breeding pastel to pastel yields a Super form. Bred into other traits yield devistatingly beautiful morphs.............. There are other traits often called "pastels" that are not and do not produce a super form ie: Vanilla "pastel", Enchi "pastel", Cinnamon "pastel", Desert "pastel", and Black "pastel". These are actually unrelated traits and have their own super forms. These newer "pastels" are more expensive in general and thus you have the common codom pastel................Now onto Jungle morph which is not a pastel or "pastel Jungle" nor is it related. I know this is a little confusing!! The Jungle morph is not a codom morph and is not predictably inheritable. aka inherited on multiple alleles. They are cool in their own right but that is all. THe "VPI Pastel Jungle" is simply a form of pastel that carries SOME resemblance to the Jungle Morph mostly in body pattern...................Final Suggestion, Buy a few higher end normal BP females. Banded types and high yellow tend to compliment the pastel trait in general appearance of offspring. Finding 06's is a good way to go as the females can take 2-3 years to reach breeding size. 50% of all offspring bred from a pastel x normal are pastels. So having a couple of normal gals around is a good way to work with as little monetary investment. BESIDES BPS are awesome..............God Bless, Lee
