retained shed in nostrils

mAli Feb 17, 2008 01:57 PM

I brought my young egyptian to the vet afraid of some type of resp. infection. No infection- just retained shed in nostrils. The vet said it is low humidity(duh). Anyway glad it is just the strills.Should clear up on it's own with a slightly higher humidity level in his hide. He is 12.5 inches now and weighing in at 380grams. Not bad for end of winter, yes? The shed is like a curly piece inside the nostril, loosening and becoming visible since the visit. He was open mouth breathing here and there and then inflating with air, then expelling air through the nose over and over for no apparent reason. Kind of loud-freaked me out a little. Wasted trip? nah. Glad he is OK. (He was not happy about the trip though.) Better safe than sorry-couldn't see the shed.

Ahh, all better. Minor dysecdysis of nostril causing transient open mouth breathing and a whistling, wheezing sound during breathing. Never heard such a thing before. Loud as hell. Evidently somewhat common. Didn't sound good. Gone in a week on it's own with a slight raise of humidity. The place gets dry in the winter up north. Even for a uro.

What an odd thing. Glad it worked out ok.
