Shocking activity in the leo tank

Maizeysdad Feb 17, 2008 09:02 PM

I am a Boa guy. No legs for me, thanks.

I bought my sons two leopard geckos last August; two female leopard geckos.

Tonight, while we're watching a movie, the leopard geckos engage in wild sexual intercourse for fifteen minutes. Not one to interrupt romance, I wait until they're done, and check out the one on top. Sure enough, she's a he (bulges and pores).

So, I reiterate, I'm a Boa guy. What's the time line on egg laying? What is needed for a laying box, incubation, etc.? Help a brother out.

They are both het Bell albino. Is that any good, as leos go?

Thanks for your help.

NO MORE LEGGED CRITTERS! But I'll sell some babies.

For a laying site, take an old deli cup/butter container and cut an access hole in it. Put some damp moss or vermiculite in it, and you'll be good. You should leave that in at all times, to aid shedding too.

Incubate the eggs in another deli cup/butter container with vermiculite or perlite. I use vermiculite, and I just get it wet, and squeeze it in my hand until no more water escapes. Incubate at 78 - 90 degrees, lower temps for females, higher for males.

If you're lucky enough to hatch a bell, I personally think they're one of the most naturally beautiful morphs.

Other post had some good info, but I will try to fill in- I use moist coco mulch for laying and incu containers. Most likely very similar to what you would use for boas. Some also use perlite, vermiculite, etc. Time for laying varies widely- I am assuming the female is a first timer, so the chances of a dud clutch 1st time around are somewhat higher than repeat breeders. She could lay anywhere from 2 weeks to up to 2 months from now. you may then expect an add'l 2 eggs every 10 days to 3 weeks (VERY rough) for the remainder of the season. He will continue to, um, solicit her throughout the season, and it may be advisable to seperate the 2. Maybe each son could have a tank? I have found that females tend to wait longer to lay when a male is around, and his constant pestering may lead to spats and possible injury to one or both. Time for hatching depends on incu temps, but figure roughly 45-75 days. And yes, with 2 bell hets, run the usual odds of hets and homo albis as for any simple recessive. Bells are very pretty, and not as common as the tremper albis.
