First eggs of the year.......

tgreb Feb 18, 2008 08:03 AM

My 2 year old Baja blue rock lizard laid 25 eggs yesterday. Looks like only 17 are fertile and even a few of those look questionable so we will see what happens. Man small compared to chuck eggs. It is going to be a pain to feed these babies. Will have to order tiny tiny bugs. Will try to get photos later.

Congratulations on the clutch. Hopefully you get a lot of good babies. You could get some flightless fruit fly cultures going. Our adult P. mearnsi love them.

tgreb Feb 20, 2008 04:44 PM

Do you have a source for them?

Tom

Our local pet stores sell them, Tom. They come with enough flies to last you a few days. If you buy enough, and save back some of the colony you can keep them going for quite a while. YOu will need to transfer them over to new media etc. They are quite easy to grow...I worked with them a lot in a genetics class a few years ago. They are tiny. They are also fairly easy to culture from the wild. Just leave a brown banana outside in the Spring and you will be able to capture plenty ;O)

Kind Regards,

John

Hey Tom, there are a lot of places online that sell fruit fly cultures. Ed's Fly Meat and Black Jungle are a couple. Austin and I also keep dart frogs, and we culture flightless fruit flies. We could send you a few cultures of the larger species if the weather ever clears up.

Do you have any pictures of your P mearnsi? Is it a male or female. I'm planning on getting some as soon whether permits. I intend to breed them.

I don't have any pics at the moment, though I could try to take some when I get home. I am out of town for a few more days. Austin and I have a 1.1 pair. They just came out of cooling, and we hope to breed them also. We will keep everyone posted, and try to get some good pics.

don't breed them anymore but when I did the hatchlings take small crikets and small giant mealworms.

That is awesome Tom. I hope some hatch. Do you remember me? I got a chuck from Nevada local from you a few years ago. She was already old. I sent you my last baja rock lizard when you lost some of your baja's and chucks. All this talk of Petrosaurus and posting pictures is making me feel like getting some again.

Yeah I remember you. I was just talking with someone about you. I have not heard from you in a long time. Hope all is well! Keeping anything now?

Yeah it' a me. I sold most of my animals. All I have as a uro, my old beardie, and a jeweled lacerta. Oh and a d. Azueres and a 10 gallon nano reef I recently started. I am thinking about a chuck. I really have the blues for those blues though. I kinda fell out of the hobby like I use to be, but held on to it. I am doin good, I am glad to see you and DVL are still here. Who were you talking to about me to? Any ways I think I am going to have to start hanging out here again.

Actually I think it was Lindsay Pike. I knew you were in Florida and he does a lot of the local shows and thought he might see you once in a while. Anyway glad to have ya back. Hey I might be able to hook you up with a chuck this year-I owe you anyway.
