chameleon diet questions

carl3 Feb 18, 2008 09:28 AM

I've been thinking about getting a chameleon. Its been a long time since I've kept chameleons (over 12 years) and I know lots has changed since then. When I kept them, crickets & hibiscus were the diet of choice. Hibiscus were always half dead b/c the plant growth could not keep up with the chams feeding on them. Plus, I absolutely HATE dealing with crickets and was wondering if anyone feeds their chameleons gut-loaded superworms in place of crickets? If so, how receptive are the chams to superworms? And finally, what vegetation alternatives are there (for instance, is there a method to feeding chams salad greens vs. growing plants?)?
Thanks in advance for help in answering these questions.
Sincerely,
Jason

Chams are primarily insectivores. Some veileds, panthers and melleri will eat leafy greens, chunks of fruit or veggies, but their primary diet is live insects. There are a couple of great websites with nutrition and feeder articles that I'd suggest reading first, then come back with specific questions. Yes there are lots of alternatives to crickets. Silkworms, hornworms, roaches, pillbugs, flies, moths, superworms all work.

I believe diet variety a cornerstone of successful husbandry.
Gut loaded crickets, butterworms, roaches, silkworms, meal worms, grasshoppers, wood sows, stick instects, etc

My panther (ambilobe) will eat almost all insects. They don't eat plants, but he'll take crickets, superworms, wax worms, house flies, almost anything! He's gone through periods where he didn't take one insect or another, but after a break will go back & take them again. Just watch what your cham will eat, don't want to risk impaction if you're just feeding one kind of insect!
