New snake.. Blackheaded or Olive.

Dyn Feb 18, 2008 06:50 PM

I'm considering getting my next snake in the near future and I cant quite decide on which one I'd like.

I hear both are pretty easy to care for in captivity which is good because while I've read alot about caring for boas/pythons and about each snake. I'm still new to keeping them.

I held a 12 foot olive at a show in december which was just awesome.

I'm having alittle trouble finding breeders of either snake though.

I agree I would go with the Blackhead. Ihave seen and worked with both. Blackheads are my favorite. Of course I am in the black head cult.

My vote goes to Olives!

Although, if I could afford a black head, I'd have one of them for sure, too!

P.S. PM me, and I'll tell ya where you can get the olives!

Price is kind of the hard part. =P

I talked with you alittle in december about it, but the more I've been looking at black heads im just not sure right now. =P

I have both, and both are neat. Of course the olive gets larger, but the BH is just a bit easier to handle. My big male olive is a handfull, but tame at about 11'. The BH's are like kittens, though the female is a bit over 8'.

Price is the main factor, and more people have been able to bread BHs than Olives.

Jaykis BHP female is smaller than mine. My female is at least 9 feet long and a bit of a handful once she's warmed up.

I would equate your question to "What's better, raspberry or blackberry pie?" Although I don't keep olives, I've seen a few captive olives.

Get what you want, enjoy them, how can you lose?

Its not so much a which pie is better... its which pie do you suggest to try first. =P

Living in the Pacific Northwest and having access to fresh blackberries, I'd try blackberry pie first.

Here's a little more detail that may help you. BHP's are not typical pythons. In my opinion, they are more like giant colubrids. Head and body shape along with how they move will remind you more of an enormous kingsnake than a python.

Olives are more like what you expect from a python.

Hope this helps.

Yea I knew that... But I've never had a colubrid before.

I'm leaning towards a blackhead... because after saving up 1200-1300 dollars for a snake... whats 500 or so more to get another =P
