Drinking Water

GoodSmeagol Feb 18, 2008 09:13 PM

I have 2 young dragons right now. They both, which is why I ask, run to the front of their basking shelf, and face me gapeing their mouths. My girl friend went to spray them lightly one day and my young lady of a dragon almost attacked the spout, lapping up the water, as it dripped out of the spout. Now they continuously run to the front and gape, she kept half pulling the trigger on the bottle, to make the water drip. That was over a week ago that she did it for 2 days, I wondered if it was right. But now they run up gape and if I take a eye dropper and make a drop of water almost drip, they lap it up, and return to their usual basking spot immedietly, other wise they wait 5-10 min then go back with out the water, to try again shortly. They each ask for 3 or 4 drips a night, about 1 ml or 2 only.
I feed them lots of greens, plus rep-cal supplements soaked in low acid applejuice50%/water50% they eat about 4 pellets of those a day plus greens, plus the water each night (only after about 9, (11-12 lights on) I cover the cage from any light during morning.

Is it ok to keep dripping them water, is that what they want, they both share this behavior, normally at the same time.
They stools are a little loose, but they bask on big pieces of slate, and clean up is easy, is a mildly loose stool bad?

They seem happy, active, eating, my lady stopped for a few days but is back at 2 doz a day greens

I have a video I want to post, of them gaping then recieving, its kind of cute.

Cheers

Doing more reading, to clarify, the stools are not entirly slimy and runny, a solid mass accompanied by a bit of watery stuff. Under the paper towels I feel the mass and 'weight' as I scoop da poop, it is solid, but with soft...
I dunno I read parasites.. thats baddd

Also unrealted(kinda) After eating what is the digestive period? ie: food to stool?

It's always worth having a fecal done regularly regardless. But, I think you're fine. A properly hydrated dragon should put some liquid out with a bowel movement. Teaching them to take water from a dropper is a good thing. When I check on mine all of the dragons that I have since babies will readily drink water from a dropper before going back to sleep. The rescues, etc. that didn't learn this when young woun't drink and that worries me over the brumation time. It's also good for rehydrating females after egg laying.

drinking water no matter how, is never a bad thing. IF they drink fine from a water dropper or mister or standing bowl of water, then thats fine. Some get all the water they need from fresh greens (always good to mist the greens too, so they have more water on the greens as in the greens)

The more hydrated the dragon is the more clear liquid will come out with the stools...its when the brown mass is really runny and without much form that indicates parasites. Basically, if it looks like diarrhea we get, then its a good indication of parasites. Also keep in mind that changes in diet or feeding lots of soft bodied insects, can cause soft stools...
