OT: My Dog got bit by a snake

BRB_Russ Feb 19, 2008 09:25 AM

Not one of mine!

My Girlfriend looked at his leg yesterday and it was swollen up big time, we looked closer and noticed two pumctire wounds. . It seems we have a snake in the back yard (enless he killed it)
I guess its either an eastern diamondback, a coral snake, or a cotton mouth. I guess it didnt get much venom in because he is taking it like a champ (the dog) We just cleaned the wound and even though it is still swolen he seems fine.

Now i have to go into the back yard and go snake hunting. . .

Glad i just got that snake hook for my new rainbows.

Maybe it was that rogue Gaboon Viper from my nightmare the other night.

Seriously, I wonder if you can distinguish coral snake fang wounds from the others since corals have small fangs?? Regardless, good to hear that your dog didn't take a big hit of venom. If you catch the perpetrator, please get some pics and post them.

Thanks,
Ed

the dog didn't get bit with anything venomous or he would have shown some signs of lying down, not wanting to move, fever etc.........although I have been known to be wrong on occassionlol can't explain the bite mark though

Don't venomous snakes sometimes hold back venom, depending on the situation. Since the dog wasn't a food item, maybe it was just a quick, defensive bite???

Thanks,
Ed

My Scottish Terrier has been bitten by Copperheads three times. All three times I found the snake either dead or injured and the dog had bite marks om his head or neck. Two of the bites caused a fair amount of swelling and pain around the face and neck so that I was worried about the dog. He actually acted fairly normally in spite of the obvious swelling. One of the bites may have been a dry bite though he did have some pain and tenderness around the bite site when I was looking him over. All three bitesd I treated right away with Benadryl and then watched him for serious swelling. The two bites with swelling I took him to the vet where they watched him for a few hours to make sure his airway stayed open and then sent him home with me with antibiotics. My dad's best friend has been bird hunting with dogs around the southeastern states for more than 50 years and has lost two dogs to Diamondback bites and had quite a few others get bitten and survive. Most Copperhead human bites are not serious though I do have a friend who spent three days in the hospital after a Copperhead bite and had several ampules of antivenin and now has a serious scar on his thumb.

this is prolly to far down in the list for anyone to read.

But yes manny times a snake withholds venom and can control exactly how much to inject as well. Also, he did vomit a couple times a day for the first few days. (which im told is a symptom)

I have a feeling he killed it too because it was on the bottom of his foot and i think he was trying to stomp on it or something.

Actually, I was aware of this (ie, snakes holding back venom), I just didn't want to make Bob feel too bad for being wrong.

Glad your dog is doing okay!

Thanks,
Ed
