Jungle corn with interesting pattern

Kevin Saunders Feb 19, 2008 07:38 PM

I hesitated to show this guy off here, but I thought a few individuals might like to see this considering his genetics. He comes from a butter motley corn and a wide reverse striped cal king, so he should be heterozygous for motley (as well as caramel and amelanism). However, he appears to express a motley pattern unlike what I'd expect from a het. I know amelanism is allelic in cal kings and corns, so I'm wondering if some of the pattern mutations might also be compatible to some degree. I suppose it's possible he has aberrant pattern that just mimics motley circles, but I'd be surprised if that's the case considering the consistency of his pattern.

He does have a little ventral pattern, but it's reduced and considering he's only half corn I don't know if I should expect a totally clean venter from a homozygous motley or not. I intend to do some test crossing later on to try to figure out if he's a het or not, but I've got a long wait ahead of me for that. I'd be interested in other thoughts on the matter.

wow. that is a very nice looking jungle. If you want some real expertise on jungle corns, I can point you to someone who deals with them, and has from the beginning. Email me if you are interested. I am sure if I said where/who, it'd get deleted.

That's really cool. I'm not into the jungles myself, but it is neat to see what sort of patterns pop out. Sometimes hybrids can look really awesome!

Hi

In our experience with the motley genetics, we have found that in most cases ( corn x cali ) the F1 hybrid will show the gene but in more of an abberant way, even in the F2 state the motley gene is more abberant than uniform.
In the case of Jungles with a high corn % (90% ) the gene seems more stable.
