Update: Black racer eggs

Weekendherper Aug 27, 2003 05:34 PM

Well the racer eggs I found in July have hatched over the last few days. A few never developed but it looks like 27 (25 so far) of 32 will hatch. My biggest concern was some green mold that developed over the last 3 weeks or so but had no apparent effect. I gave away a pair to a friend that frequents these boards but I'm letting the rest go.

Here's a couple of pics...

Hey, this is Milt! The two babies are doing well...they are both in shed now. Hopefully they will eat something after they shed. Take care...Milt

A couple of things to try them on would be small treefrogs or small lizards...pinkies might be too big for 'em yet.

Nice goin'! Amazing how many people are absolutely flummoxed by those little critters. Don't know how many times I've heard "Are you sure that's a black racer?".

Thanks for reporting back (and with pics, too!). So often people drop in, get info and are never heard from again. Moldy or not, those eggs certainly did stay nice and plump all the way to the end. Releasing the hatchlings sounds wise. Has anyone been successful keeping Coluber species long-term? Doesn’t seem like it would be much fun.
