NO WAY!!!

povmichael123 Feb 19, 2008 11:24 PM

so i went to a really good pet shop today and they had a real nice hypomelanistic BRB for sale. it was lacking a price tag so i asked and she told me $2,000. I thought this was a little pricy, although i could be wrong. Can any of you tell me if this is right?

and check out what me and my friend happened to come across under a rock on some trail in san jose! BEAUTIFUL baby rattlesnake!!

looks a lot bigger than it actually was

That's not a bad price at all. I've seen pairs for sale at around $5000. Just a single het female sells for around $1000.

That's a nice rattlesnake. What kind is it? I saw my first wild one last summer while on a dinosaur dig in Montana. One more step and I would have been right on top of this 4 foot Prairie rattler! It didn't give much of a warning.

believe me. That one may not have nice crescents, nice color cuz if the color isn't nice than it is prolly a low colored hypo. They are variances in the litter and the prices "should be" different from one another cuz they are not all made equally

2000.00 is an excellent price for nice looking hypo female. It almost sounds too good to be true. None of the breeders I know are selling them for less than 3k so retail stores would have to sell them for more to turn a profit. You might ask a bit about its background. Who knows, maybe it's the real deal.

Mike,
....I bet a beer that it is not an animal from your proven hypo bloodline and that instead it is just a nice light orange normal BRB.

haha hopefully im not looking into getting it but just wanted to find out it is a very nice looking animal so maybe somewhere down the road ill get it!!

natsamjosh Feb 21, 2008 06:57 AM

I agree it sounds fishy. But where is the pet shop? Maybe someone else in the forum lives near it and can check it out.

Thanks,
Ed

its East Bay Vivarium in Berkley California so if any of you guys live near there check it out!

natsamjosh Feb 21, 2008 01:08 PM

Could the snake have been a het for hypo rather than an actual
hypo?

some hypos have very nice crescents, some almost have eclipse phase crescents (which doesn't show color in the hypo it show black or albino phases which shows white), some have nice color, some have great color and others have not so good color. So given all of that it is hard to pay the asking price for one when they are all labeled the same but don't all look the same. Hypo bci's range from $200-2k just depends what you're looking for. I think more and more people will try to undercut other competitors (big names) so be careful who you buy from and it is all about the lineages and the normals used to outcross and so on and so on......... sorry for rambling
Bob

Mike Lockwood and I believe they were the first ones to get into the hypo project after Mike produced them. They have very high prices to begin with and their males are still 5k or something like that so I believe it is just a very low colored one. I also believe that is where Bryan Hummel got his "red" hypo from but could be wrong but don't think so

At Eastbay Vivarium. Then it must be the real deal. So it looks like I owe everyone a beer. So I am buying at Daytona. I better qualify that and make it that I am buying a beer for all the Rainbow Boa forum regulars at Daytona.

Bob,
...I actually went to see the Seminoles home game against NC State. My favorite niece is a Seminole. Lots of family members have made bad choices.

I haven't been in ther in a while, but Bob's history lesson is correct. If EVB is calling it a hypo, then it's a hypo. 2k is a steal. Better get her quick!

Mike's website I can't tell you how many times I have read that page Mike but I love where you can read about the guy you are buying from like yourself, and Will Bird has another good one too. Mike is it safe to say that your line is the only one out there cuz I truely believe it is. take care and who let you out of school so early huh???

flavor Feb 21, 2008 04:25 PM

There is a line that has been started by Darren Bell. It isstill being worked with but I don't know if new hypos have ever been produced. You also hear of a few spontaneous hypo births occurring here and there. Two years ago a guy in New Jersey produced what look like hypos.

By the way, I just have a few minutes here between class and swim practice. Back to work.

Like Mike already said, if it's at EBV then it's a hypoo.

BUT, not all hypos are created equal. I saw some they had for sale at recent shows and IMO they were quite inferior in color when compared to Mikes at the very same shows. I was almost embarrased for them (EBV that is).
