Sexing

I just read the post about sexing boxies. Is there a general "age" that you should be starting to notice the differences? When I still had my male & female (he escaped last summer....), I could easily see the [textbook] differences in the 2. I now have 2 yearlings and 6 hatchlings, so was wondering how long I can safely keep them enclosed together before I have to worry about the birds & the bees and do a habitat make-over.

The birds and the bees kick in based on size more than age. When their shells get to 4" or so long, you'll begin to see differences. The growth rate can be so variable, depending on the amount and types of food they're fed, the length of the warm season, whether or not they hibernate, etc., that there can be huge variations in the actual age of sexual maturity.

I guess my question should have been, when are they sexually mature? IOW, when do I need to worry about separating them? These guys & girls are all related.....
