Eastern Kings

Tony D Feb 20, 2008 08:48 AM

Been a little slow around here lately so I'm just gonna say eastern kings suck!

I mean unless you like large, robust, nearctic constrictors with glossy high contrast pattern and frightening feeding responses what is there to like about them? Even worse is locality eastern! Come on you seen one you seen them all!

And they have this chain pattern which reminds me too much of prison, and those disgustingly smooth shiny scales. Give me a water snake with the dull keeled scales any day. And no ontogenic change as they grow? The only good thing I can think about them is that you can feel free to house them together. Jeers, HS

yeah chainkings compared with other getula ssp. is like comparing guinness stout with miller lite taste great, less filling...
plus they get big, are very personable and their poopy stinks who wants that???

Well damn it! That's it! You guys have done it to me. Been thinking off and on about getting a pair, but have not yet. Was interested in maybe Trans Pecos rat as my next purchase. Not now! Gotta have some Easterns! What beautiful snakes!

Patton Feb 20, 2008 05:38 PM

What locale is that nearly patternless from Mark?
That thing is oh so cool!

I think we have all jumped on the eastern king too fast. Tony merely had a typo and meant all along to say how much he disliked kinKed snakes.

These are from my '07 Virginia Beach Easterns.

Don't tread on me? How'z about I just eat you instead!

Here's an F1 '06 Va. Bch. male from a gravid WC female.

Yep! Seen one seen them all!

One phrase for that first picture: "Strike a pose!"

Beautiful pictures, guys. Love the sarcasm though, that made my day. ^_^

LOL, you must be in a GREAT mood! Nice snakes Tony! Ever find any in your neck of the woods with mid band flecking like that of a OBX? Best looking Eastern I ever saw was from your town. Jeff

Tony D Feb 21, 2008 08:28 AM

I love sarcasm and ironey but it isn't always easy to pick up on in this type of venue.

I've seen some Currituck easterns that look exactly like OBX kings and I've seen OBX kings that look exactly like easterns!

Since we're on a "chain king kick", (say that ten times real fast) here's a few of mine. First up, a 2006 Greenville, SC female from Peter Jolles. She's jet black with thin, light canary chains. Last two pics are my Va. Beach Easterns from Howie Sherman.

I know I've posted this one before, but he was such a beautiful snake. I found him in my parents' front yard in Easley, SC, right outside of Greenville. After the picture, I put him back in the yard. I found him in August of 2001.

I just hate being left out of a beautiful Eastern Kingsnake discussion. ^_^

This is just my opinion but Pungo Ridge easterns are to me just classic. Found some beuts over the years. Wish I still had a few. There are presious few places to look anymore along the ridge.

Steve_Craig Feb 20, 2008 09:01 PM

Tony, that first chain king you have pictured has a classic smiley face. It's the little things like that that entertain me, LOL

Steve the last one was an insitu shot of a Northampton County king and he was simply incredible. Started kicking myself in the butt five mins after walking away from him. The worst part is his former home is now a sub-division so a lot of good my leaving him there did.

wisema2297 Feb 21, 2008 09:08 AM

While everyone else is posting pics.......

Charlotte County VA

Scotland County, NC

pair of Calvert County MD from wc gravid female (Peter Jolles), one w/ black belly

Some Va beach CB's from Howie Sherman and Phil Patton

pure white belly on the abherent above

Hyde County X Beaufort County NC, classic chain pattern

and last but not least OBK's since they are now considered just variants of easterns. These are from Howie.

The last is still a non feeder for me...grrrr. But she is growing on a steady diet of frozen corn hatchlings (force feed 1/2 a snake per feeding) that died in the egg and mouse tails.

elaphopeltishow Feb 21, 2008 10:48 AM

Hey Ralph, sorry the ob king isnt feeding voluntarily. try ground skinks. it has triggered an immediate and ferocious feeding response from recalcitrant neonates in close to 100% of the time. they are looking good however and should be outstanding once they start to take off.

Obscenity Feb 21, 2008 12:04 PM

Awesome pictures, everyone. I've always loved Eastern kings. Especially jet black ones with nice, clean white chain patterns. I've decided on getting a black milk with my tax refund, but now I'm thinking about getting an Eastern king as well. I have plenty of housing supplies for both and more, since all of my tanks are sitting empty right now.

wisema2297 Feb 21, 2008 02:31 PM

Thanks Howie. It's not a big deal ff her now. She is actually easy to do it with and will start swallowing on her own once it is started down the throat. It shouldn't be longer now till she is eating on her own. She is so damned pretty I really don't mind at all!!

jserrao Feb 21, 2008 12:14 PM

I'm with you guy's chains are BORING. That's why I decided to trade my six locality pairs for a nine way Jurassic cross and three male import Balls.

BTW Howie - You had me rolling for 5 minutes with your "walking into walls" quote last week. That would explain some of your past Okeetee security officer captures. That's why I always be sure to leave a trail of cheese doodles or fries back to the truck so I can maintain my sexy physique and prevent disorientation in the field.

elaphopeltishow Feb 21, 2008 01:00 PM

How are those Easterns you grabbed from me in daytona doing? any pics, as they were truly outstanding if memory serves.

jserrao Feb 24, 2008 10:37 AM

looking and doing great. I'm horrible at getting pic's of my stuff. Any Easter or spring travel plans ?
