How to annoy a Spilotes?

vegasbilly Feb 20, 2008 02:38 PM

Clean the cage! There's been lots of breeding activity over the last week - I've increased temps and am spraying twice daily after a long "dry" spell. The reaction to the increased humidity is immediate....they fly around the cage, twitching like breeding Cal-Kings, the male is chasing the females trying to line them up...and the females are irritable - as the pics attest. I changed out the litter in the nest box as this is a favorite defecation spot! All in all things are progressing nicely.

Very Nice!!

Good Luck with the breeding!! Spilotes are soo nice to work with! Definately my favortie species!

P.S.: If your breeding is successful, I would definately buy a pair, since the pair I have both come from the same parents and I would prefer to not inbreed the ones I have.

Thanks

No problem though there's a ton of people interested. I wouldn't worry about breeding siblings...though this will irk some people...its never been proven out that inbreeding is detrimental to reptiles. There are just too many isolated populations of various herps world-wide that have to have been inbreeding for generations w/no outwardly apparent ill-effects. If that were the case, these populations would no longer exsist. Besides, a male out cruising for mates would doubtfully pass on by a receptive female if it was his sister! LOL
