Using Bar Top epoxy...

avtdocz Feb 20, 2008 04:59 PM

I know this question has been brought before in the past but wanted to retouch base on it...

When using bar top epoxy, how long of a waiting period should one wait to let everything off gas before using it in the enclosure?? I plan on using the stuff to coat the back, bottom and interior sides of the enclosure. ( side note, I'm going to layer some background pictures of plants and trees into the epoxy layers, got the idea from one of my favorite adult beverage establishments... any ways... )

Chris, feel free to jump on this one if you'd like or get around to it...

Sounds like a cool project, keep us posted.

Regarding your specific question, I would check with the manufacturer. The only times I have used it the off-gassing period was about two weeks simply because I was finishing other parts of the cage or waiting for parts. My perception was that I could have used the cages earlier if I had been ready.

Be extremely thorough when mixing this product. It is very sensitive to improper mixing and can create a gloppy mess if not mixed enough or in proper ratio.

You might also read up on the two tub mixing method, or whatever it is called. Basically you mix it up and then pour (without scraping) the contents into another container and mix it again. Read up on it to make sure I have that right.

I have had zero problems with these products, even for projects that were cheap and had nothing to do with reptiles. But others have had issues with it, so be aware.

I'm not sure I was clear. What I meant is that I have used left over bar top epoxy on projects that really did not matter a whole lot. Just minor craft type projects to use up leftover material. Even in these situations where I was not concerned with ruining the project and did not pay much attention to mixing I still had excellent results.

On the other hand, I have heard of people using these projects and having complete disasters with improper curing and soft spots throughout the project. Just wanted you to keep this in mind. Mixing is very important.
