New Lens = New Pics

TopNotchBoas Feb 22, 2008 10:35 AM

I recently acquired a new macro lens for my camera (thanks Adrian!) and have been snapping away. For you camera buffs it's a Nikon 60mm 2.8. I've been wanting this lens since I got into DSLR's, primarily for boa photos. Here's a few shots I've managed so far:

1999 Normal Female with 2003 SuperSalmon Male

2002 Gravid Arabesque Het Albino Het Stripe ... She was bred by my Sunglow male that produced incredible sunglows last year.

2003 Albino Het Stripe in with the Sunglow Male. They produced a litter last year. Ya think this studly male can pull off two litters in one year?? I hope so!

2005 Motley Het Albino

And last but not least my albino female that I produced in 2007. The gravid arabesque pictured previously is her mom.

That albino would look good even if you used a phone camera.

I'm holding out for one of these...

105mm It'll be a while before I can get it though.

Great pics BTW. You can have a lot of fun with a good lens.

Rich I have to admit that trying to read that gave me a headachelol but what is wrong with this lens that you took this pic with if you don't mind me asking? excuse me cuz I don't know too much about cameras so keep it simple
Bob

that is your pic huh????

Nothing quite "wrong" with it. It's just a basic AF lens though. it came with the camera. A macro lens is made more specifically for working close, they focus better, let in more light, etc.

Notice the fuzzy focus around the edges of that picture? Because I had to use a filter to get that close. I won't need a filter with a Macro lens, so less distortion on the edges.

Make sense?

It does a little. I was looking into getting a Nikon D80 later in the year 10.2 megapixel and it comes with 2 lens options

18-55mm
18-135mm

what would be the difference, zooming from far away? cuz that is what I want to do a lot of the times so I don't wash out any with the flash but it's impossible right now with my current one.

Ophidia_Junkie Feb 23, 2008 06:02 AM

The D-80 has sensors, and will make adjustments to the intensity of the built in flash if you are close and in certain shooting modes, to prevent that wash out you speak of. That picture above was taken with the 18-55mm AF S lens and a + 10 Macro filter. Pretty basic stuff, nothing fancy or high cost.

There's a trade-off for the wide coverage on the longer range lenses. It would likely be best for you to get the 18-55, which covers the most used ranges and then later get longer range lenses and macro lenses for their respective purposes.

I'm loving the 60mm macro so far. It is very sharp and the bokeh (quality of the blurred background) is much better than I am used to.
