Breeding pic and a ?

kinderman Feb 22, 2008 06:42 PM

I am trying to get a few smaller and young males (500-700) to "get busy". My 500 gram boy from my previos post is clearly not the norm. The 3 girls he is covering are between 1800-2400 grams. I think I cuaght him tickling/spurring my arm yesterday! I was thinking about putting them with a female that has follicles and/or has already been bred by another male. I want to make it as easy for them as possible. Also, from anyone's experience -- does the size (using a smaller girl) have any merit? Thanks for any ideas and or tricks that might be up your sleaves. Enjoy the pic. Thanks for looking!

Bill, I always start the young ones off on the smaller girls. Then as they get it going I bump them up to the beasts.. I have some pics of 300g males breeding 3500 g females. I dont post them anymore because people think I like to kill my males lol!
You just need to have some patience with the young males. They know what to do and when to do it..

I have an 06 male mojave here that has bred 2 females, I don't think he has hit 400 grams yet. He's breeding and still eating.

thats small for an 06, but as long as he is still eating, Have at it!

Jas, Thanks for the girl-size tip, and I do have to remind myself that they operate from instinct and couldn't give a flying frisbee about MY breeding agenda.LOL They have sperm plugs, and in truth, have been with the girls for less than 3 weeks. I'm sure I will open up a tub one morning they willf lick their tongue and give me a wink. Thanks again.

We were surprised our 480 gram spider started breeding. After he locked up for the first time, he was still reluctant to lock up again. After a week of showing no interest with the female(1800 grams), just to see what would happen, I introduced an even smaller male into the enclosure to simulate competition. The next morning I woke to find the spider and the female locked up and the smallest male on the other side of the enclosure. To prove that this wasn’t coincidental, I tried it again a week later after they were all separated. I introduced the spider and the female and there were no lock ups witnessed in the first 2 days. I introduced the other smaller male on the third day, and on the fourth day we once again had a lock up with the spider. I did this once again afterwards and had the same results. After the third time, I have not needed to introduce the smaller male. He now locks up within 24 hours.
I was fully aware that this could have backfired. Though unlikely, the smaller male could have locked up but being that he was only 300 grams, I did not worry so much.

I have sparred mature males a couple of times, but didn't want to try it with a small guy. Interesting research on your part. That sparring thing is some strange instinct stuff -- I love it. Nice spider!
