Hogg Island Boa

livewire Feb 22, 2008 09:28 PM

I am purchasing a Hogg Island Boa soon. And I just wanted to prepare myself. It is an 07 baby.
What size of tank is appropiate (10 gallon?), substrate, what shall the humidity be at, the temps. If I'm not mistaken, is the temps a high of around 95 good for about 12 hours of the day on the hot side and a low of 80 on the cool side. Just some stuff to prepare for.
Thank you.

My experience with Hog islands is 88 deg.F max on the high side.
80 deg.F is OK on the low side. No heat lamps.
12 Qt Sterilite tub is best. Burn a half dozen holes in each end for ventilation. Or, you can buy Styrene Critter Cages same size cheap at pet shops.
Good luck.

Substrate -- paper towels, newspaper, or Aspen.
Keep water bowl in for humidity. Spray substrate occasionally (warm side every other day).

Hog Isles do well with these parameters.80-88*F 45-55% humidity.
Tanks are for fish and lights are for lizards. If you can afford it buy a cage that will suit the animal for its entire life(example 4x2x18)
Have everything in place well in advance of getting the animal....What heat source you going to use ? How will you control it ?
Practice your heat and humidity control for a few weeks.
Do you have a feeding schedule in order ? Prey source lined up for F/T ?
BCI ssp. Dont need the all to common "hammer feed" schedules many follow for speed growing a fat animal.
Is there a QUALIFIED Herp Vet in your area for Emergencies ?
Be absolutely sure your ready to care for this animal over the next 10-15 YEARS!
Random thoughts in the fog of early morning ......
