Axanthic Lottery??

4ktung Feb 22, 2008 09:45 PM

A friend of mine has had this snake for 2 years now. When he bought it, he bought it out of a "tub" full of juvenile ball pythons. He picked this one out looking for a pet & grabbed it because it looked different than the others. The way he described it, he said it looked green. Having hearing of this snake I finally decided to take a ride over and look at it. My first impression was that it was the most axanthic looking normal ball python I have ever seen & if somebody had this for sale at a show as an axanthic I wouldn't even question it. I have posted a picture of it below, & like you've heard a million times before, the picture doesn't do it justice. I took this photo with my phone so the quality isn't that great. It is in the picture with his normal male for comparison. What do you think?
P.S. The real kicker in all of this is that if it is an axanthic, he actually talked the guy down from $15 to $12!

Doesn't look Axanthic (lacking yellow/brown)...good looking animal though...definitely got a deal.

You're probably right. I mean a $12 axanthic seems too good to be true. Like I said though, the photo doesn't do it justice. I'll try and get some photos with my digital camera & re-post. To me, in person, this snake appears to be black, gray & white. A lot of mobile phones have a tendancy to give things a yellowish tint. I'm not trying to make something out of nothing. Would be cool though. Who knows, maybe I'll set this thing up with a het axanthic male & see what happens. I do value your opinion though. Just about anyone is more experienced at this than I am, I was just kinda comparing her to others I've seen for sale on Kingsnake & couldn't find a whole lot of difference in color. Thanks again.

You're right about them being difficult to photograph. Have you seen any axanthics in person? Thats the best way to compare rather then with photos.

I was just at the Hamburg,Pa reptile show today and saw several Axanthics & I am seeing no difference in them or my friends snake. I guess the only way to tell for sure is to prove her out. She's about 800g now so maybe next winter we'll get her a mate & see what happens.
