Silkies as a staple diet

taralynn_hughes Aug 27, 2003 07:21 PM

We are really thinking about putting Roan on a new diet plan. We want him to eat mostly silkworms because they are suppositly much better for them than crickets.
If we did this, how many silkworms should he get a day, and how many crickets?
I read not long ago someones ideal plan for feeding and it went something like this.....maybe
55% silworms
35% crickets
5% mealworms
5% butter worms/wax worms

Is this a good meal plan, and if so, how many would be 55%, 35% ,and 5% be? Roan got alittle fat, but it's under control now.
We've always been unsure how much to feed him.

if it's a veiled cham, a good diet for an adult over 12 months would be approx. 6 large insects every other day. from 6-12 months, they should recieve 6 large insects every day. by large i mean the size of a full grown cricket. so a 3" silkie would count as 3 crickets. silkies are more nutritious, simply because of their calcium to phosphorous levels. they are more in balance with what your cham needs. with all the stats stacked up, they are the better food. see my site for a detailed guide to feeding and supplementing at the different ages.
