Good by fuzzy mice

Steve_Craig Feb 23, 2008 01:22 PM

I usually don't leave mice on the floor (unsupervised) but I had three fuzzies on some newspaper and got side tracked for a couple of minutes, and when I got back, this butthead had sucked them up faster then you can say what happend. What did I expect, he's a Terrier. They were bred to destroy rats & mice, LOL. I guess I should look on the bright side, I could have had jumbo mice and rats laying on the floor. Anyone else have any simular experiences with other pets & feeder rodents?

yes, my portuguese water dog has grabbed a few thawed mice in the past.. But, then again he eats sticks and rocks out in the yard so how bad could a mouse be for him??

Years ago I had a large male iguana that had the run of my reptile room. He would sneak up and swallow any frozen/thawed rodenst left within reach. Definitely not good for him!

That's funny!

So is that a Manchester Terrier? I thought it was a Doberman but there's nothing in the photo for scale.

We have two Jack Russells, same mentality. They are awfully interested around mouse thawing time, but so far none have 'escaped.'

Jack Russells get disconbobulated(nervousness to the Extreme)my neighbor used to carry his just to show him the rats.it was a shakey (I GOTTA HAVE)maybe they are hunters LOL...........
But i have never seen a dog eat carion "Well Maybe"

Steve_Craig Feb 23, 2008 07:33 PM

Hey Eddie. Yes, he's a Manchester Terrier. Funny thing is he pays no attention to any of my snakes. I could be holding one, and the dog could be on my lap and he doesn't even pay attention to them.
So you have two Jack Russells? Now that's alot of energy you have running around the house, LOL. But you got to love Terriers. They are a great group of dogs.

The bad news is one of them is just a puppy! He's got crazy energy.

no not THAT one

Steve_Craig Feb 24, 2008 09:58 AM

Richard, I love Fox Terriers. If I had not got a Manchester Terrier, my other choice would have been a smooth fox terrier. They are awesome dogs. Post a pic one time when you get a chance.

I like those smooth fox terriers too. The ones with white bodies and darker heads.

Terriers are cool dogs, but I prefer larger breeds... but I admire Eddie in his ability to keep 2 Jack Russels in the house at the same time without strangling them...

I'll stick to my Aussie... who so far has prven he'll eat anything, including the screws for a window frame... lucky for me, he can't reach the top of the snake cages when I'm thawing mice...

these pictures are from when he was 3 onths old... I need to get some new ones up...

I have a 2yr old female yellow lab that will eat any frozen mice she can get to if we're not watching. She has wiped out 20-30 mice at times that were set out to thaw. It really pisses me off if Im just getting to the end of a batch right before I order more and she eats them...then I may not have enough to feed my snakes until the next batch arrives.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Steve_Craig Feb 23, 2008 07:40 PM

20-30 mice at a setting? Ouch. Now that could get expensive. So have you noticed a growth spurt since your labs been feeding on mice? We might have to write the dog food companies. Instead of lamb & rice, maybe they could produce mice n rice or something.

What's up w/ the mice and dogs? I'm a bit more traditional. I was feeding my Sinaloan Milk several live hoppers, one of which which escaped on the kitchen counter (don't ask me why I pulled a bonehead move like setting a bag of live hoppers onthe kitchen counter). My wife's cat, Blu,(10 y.o. Abyssinian male) which is usually an abject coward, jumped up on the counter, got the mouse, jumped down onto the floor, stunned it and left the mouse there for me toss it to my snake. Good thing, my wife would've killed me if a mouse got loose in the kitchen.

I have three cats... none of which seem to be interested in the mice. I even let one sniff a thawed fuzzy to see what she'd do. She sniffed it and gave me a snotty "how dare you" look. The snake on the other hand... they'll sit for hours in front of the terrarium just to get a glance at her poking her head out of the rock.

No, but I had a dog that ate a bunch of kittens once.

Not my fault, I swear!

I have some feeder mice loose in my garage..... guess I should really motivate and build some proper lids for those tubs. lol Anyway, one of my siberian huskies, Melani, likes to sit outside the back door to the garage and wait for mice to come out. I saw her on the porch a few weeks ago with a tail sticking out of her mouth. She ate it before I had a chance to stop her. She's out there right now in fact.

BillMcgElaphe Feb 24, 2008 11:16 AM

That’s really too funny, Steve, and I’ve had a Dachshund, a Pomeranian, a Collie and a Beagle gobble a feeder or two, but I need help from all you good folks to remember who posted on KS, 4 or 5 years ago about the mysterious loss of some thawed pinks.
.
To the best recollection of this post by a drooling old fool, the gist of it was:
.
.
A breeder reported thawing a handful of pinks and was busying around the reptile room.
A couple came in to purchase a CB animal and the breeder got even busier helping them make a decision on the best choice for them.
The transaction was made and the couple left.
The pinks were gone!!!
The only living creature that was anywhere near the bowl of pinks during all of this was the couple's curious toddler!!!
Hmmm – Gummy rats…..
.
My apologies for not remembering all the details, especially the breeder who told this story.

Wow... and that's one of the reasons I wait until my toddlers are in bed before feeding my snake. My arctic mice are quite sterile and parasite free, but dang, I just wouldn't want my kids to try a "gummy mouse" :P

The good news is that after a pink has been frozen for more than 40 days, most everything bad has been killed.
On a negative note, the couple reported the child still occasionally crawls out on the rocks in the front yard to bask in the sun!

I have a Cairn that is way too interested in the snakes but doesn't want anything to do with the mice. However my cat is a different story.
