Gravel or sand

ucsda Aug 27, 2003 07:39 PM

Do hatchling softshells (spiny and Florida) HAVE to have sand or can gravel work? They couldn't bury themselves in it but I'm wondering if they have enough hiding spots could they live well in aquarium store white gravel....Because sand just gets too dirty too fast and I have a great filter....Thanks.

I recently bought some fl softies and was told that the gravel would be too abrasive on their shells. I have sand in mine and you would be surprised at how little dirt it actually gets. I screened the sand first and washed it very good, then baked it in a 200* oven for about an hour. I haven't had any problems with it since doing that. They love to dig around in it and bury themselves.
