Am I doing this right?

justinmorse Feb 24, 2008 01:56 AM

Okay so I've been doing some reading up and video watching of popping, and figured I'd give it a shot.

I popped my 2 pastels who are both in the 120-130 gram range, and both popped to be what looked like female (no hemipenes), yet one is supposed to be a male.

I then popped my g/f's unsexed pet store BP, about twice the size of the pastels, and got the same result.

Do I have 3 females, or am I just doing something wrong?

You're probably doing it incorrectly.

It is very very very obvious between the male and the female.

It is hard to learn to pop through a video. You need to find someone that knows how and can show you hands on, that's how I learned.

LOL yeah I'm not worried about being able to tell the difference.

No hemipenes are coming out of my supposed male.

I suppose I should just by a probe kit and say screw the popping thing.

I personally can't pop anything larger than 100 grams. Nothing to be ashamed of...they just have better muscle control than my popping abilities can conquer!

Popping a hatchling is easy, and the best way to learn. You do see a fairly obvious difference between male and female.

Probing, though, is a much more accurate and fairly easy way to tell genders. With anything I can't easily pop, I probe to doublecheck just in case.

When you do not use enough pressure, you get false female results. I wouldn't recommend using more pressure however, though I would HIGHLY recommend you finding someone who can show you in person how this is done. It's something you need to be taught in person for sure. A video won't cut it.
