Transportation HELP! Moving entire....

GabooNx Feb 24, 2008 10:28 AM

collection!!!

What a busy time, the wife and I are relocating about 2hrs away from our current location, since I have never moved an entire snake collection 20plus animals they range from milks, kings, pythons and boas what if any recommendation could anyone give me?

I can tell you they will be ridding with me in my Pilot so what would you all suggest?
I was thinking pillow cases/large boxes with news papers for the boids and smaller containers with newspapers for the colubrid? Any other ideas?

Right now I took them all off food but might get one more big feed in before the move in two weeks..

If you're hitting the road in 2 weeks, don't feed them - let them clean out and lower the temps a few degrees.
Deli cups and bags or screw top plastic jars/jugs work fine but protect them from drafts and sun by using a large cooler or insulated box. Pad the box with balls of newspaper or shredded newspaper between the bags and jars so the kids aren't bounced and jarred too much.
Snakes pack very well and the drive is 2 hours or so, this will be fairly simple.
If the drive is in the daytime, beware of the sun roasting the container/box through the window, park in the shade if you must and don't break down.
I drove from Miami to Minneapolis with an SUV full of snakes and Tampa to Miami in July - it can be done with a little planning.

I would go with snake bags or pillow cases. You can get cheap styrofoam coolers to put them in. The smaller stuff can go in deli cups. The cooler will keep the temp somewhat constant. You can fit lots of adult Colubrids in 1 cooler. You can also use any shipping boxes with the styrofoam lining. That is how I would do it. Good luck. Derek

Hi Jason,

Make sure that which ever container you decide to use is secure. On our move back to North Carolina from Florida, we had an adult Honduran get out. He stayed up in my dashboard for two days before we were able to get him out. Usually we will run the heat in our vehicle a little warmer than usual if it is cold and keeping them out of direct sun light is a must.

Good Luck!

A large beverage/Igloo cooler works well for transporting snakes.. They usually lock closed, so it's secure and it will maintain temps well if you throw in a few heat packs..

Good luck with your move!

Thanks for all the responses!!

My SUV has tinted windows but I will still be mindful of direct sunlight.

I might use the cheap coolers to keep them in with lots of newspaper padding..

Of course pillow cases for the large animals and deli cups for the smaller..

Sadly I wont be able to feed the snakes for at least a month assuming they eat a week after the move while this is nothing for most of my snakes but I am a little worried about my milks... The temps are lower then normal so I think they should be fine..

I recently moved 13 snakes in a 5 hour drive. I just packed everything into appropriately sized deli cups, Ziploc Takealong food containers and small sterile boxes. I put all the containers in one large sterile box on my front seat and hit the road. There were a couple of regurges and alot of feces, but no problems.

Forgot to mention that my drive was at night so I didn't have to worry about the sun like the other guys mentioned. Please watch out for that!
