Bothrochilus Boa (Bismark Ringed Python)

jackalkat Feb 24, 2008 03:24 PM

Hello all!

I am new here but have been handling snakes and lizards for quite a while now. I have been interested in acquiring a Bismark ringed python for a while but, as it does not seem to be a common breed, I was wondering if any of you here have had experience with them. I'd like to know a bit more about them before I jump to get one. I am capable of caring for a fossorial snake and know the humidity and substrate requirements. How are their temperaments as adults?

Thank you for your time!

Hello, Ringed pythons are great snakes but their temperament depends on the individual animal, the amount of handling they receive and the human keeper. They can be more active then most pythons, a little jumpy and they can be high strung. In my experience most of that can be linked to their above average feeding response. Most calm down quite a bit once they are out of their enclosure and realize its not feeding time. So with that said they are great pythons for the advanced keeper but not a beginner python. I hope that helps. Thanks Tom

I have never liked the adults I have seen in pictures before Tom's, so with that said if I ever do go the route of getting some of these it will be undoubtably from Tom. (See his post down below of his adults... incredible!!!) I have also been told that all rings are pretty incredible as adults in direct sunlight or strong full spectrum lighting so I guess I really need to see some adults in person before I go buying any. Tom's response is right on. I treat any animal in my care as a pet, so each of my Rings are handled several times a week. All but one. All of my Rings were purchased as hatchlings, except for one. That one was purchase at about 8 years old and was raised as a breeder. She is absolute hell! Only wants to eat you! However, her clutches are about 50% more than average, so.... I have loved keeping a small group of this breed for about 7 years now. Yes, the adults are breathtaking in sunlight! They literally throw rainbows in every direction. Very curious and active, HUGE feeding response, great size, as long as you have some patience, and experience, you can't go wrong with Rings. - Brian
