my first feed tonight and some ????'s

mldolan Feb 24, 2008 04:12 PM

I'm feeding my 2 bp's tonight for the first time (i will be feeding a thawed, warm pre-killed mouse in a separate secure feeding container) and was wondering
1. how should i present the mouse to the snake? just drop it in, or jiggle it around with tongs(actually chopsticks) for a while?
2. how long should i present the food to the snake b4 giving up?
3. how long should i wait b4 i put the snake back in its cage, and is there any special handling of a snake with a belly full of mouse?
4. with my second bp should i feed at same time wait an hour a day etc? any other special considerations?
thanks a bunch and wish me luck
Mike

If feeding F/T, I see no reason to feed in a different enclosure. I would just drop it in in the evening and check it in the morning. If your snake will take it this way, it's a lot less hassle for you.

You really should not keep two together unless you are breeding them together.

You really need to seperate these two guys. I think this was talked about in another thread. They need to be seperated for more reasons than just feeding.

first snake took mouse in about a minute, jiggled it a bit to get its attention then POW hit it like lightning. second one looked like he was gonna take the mouse but i think a noise in the house spooked him as he was getting ready to strike. i left him with the mouse for about half an hour but no deal. guess i'll try again in a few days.

make sure it's a warm food item.

If you have presented the prey item for awhile, it gets cold Remove it and heat it up again, sometimes I will only rehaet the head portion and then try again.

DrBubbleBerry Feb 26, 2008 12:08 PM

lol how do you only heat up the head portion? Do you stick the mouse's head over the stove?

zefdin Feb 26, 2008 05:48 PM

I stick only the head under a heat lamp. Some people use a hairdryer to heat ony the head.

Oven...I have never tried that one! LOL!

DrBubbleBerry Feb 26, 2008 09:47 PM

LOL! I dont know why that came out of my head... I guess cause I was thinking... How can you only microwave the head and not the body?... I never thought about a hair dryer or heat lamp! LOL

30 minutes is not long enough in my opinion. leave it overnight.

If it doesn't eat wait until the next feeding (7-10 days) If you wait a day or two and try again it will stress the snake and will take longer to eat and just frustrate you.
