I acquired a pair of Kankakee Il locality bull neonates from John Meltzer in August 2001-beautiful, high contrast black and yellow animals. Unfortunately, about a year ago the male was able to escape from his container in my basement. I turned the place upside down with no luck. Figured he was gone for good- a pair of red shouldered hawks nest in the woods behind my house and eastern kings are common around here, not to mention the numerous dogs and cats in the neighborhood.
Two weeks ago I was outside working in the yard and happened to glance at dead branches which had fallen on the deck-out of the corner of my eye I saw something fall off of the railing. Much to my surprise, it was my male bullsnake. He seemed none the worse for wear for his year away and surprisingly, was roughly equal in size and weight with the female, who has been enjoying regular feedings-guess he had been putting a dent in the chipmunk population around here. Once I got him back inside he immediately horsed down a small rat and has been doing well ever since.
Doesn't hurt to be lucky every once in a while!
