sigh, I think that I am a glutton for animals with less than pet attitudes ....

Da Truth Aug 27, 2003 08:09 PM

I currently have a nile, and after I make his new enclosure(sometime around october) I will need a new tennent for his old enclosure. I was thinking 2 ackies, but then i was looking at timors, and I really want them. I know that the attitudes of timors are far less people friendly than ackies, but I still want them. And i got a nile, I cant get much worse.
I am starting to think I am not thinking with my best thoughts in mind. I mean, why would I want 3 monitors that dont care for me, when i could have 1 that doesnt, and 2 that are indifferent(hopefully). Another reason I think I want them is because i hear of a lot of people that have ackies, but not nearly as many have timors.

I dont know, maybe im just being silly. actually, the more i think about it, I dont think that I will be able to get a timorensis or 2, because they are at least 50% arboreal. So I guess i just solved my problem.

In a somewhat related note, I live in Philadelphia, and i was wondering about the SS troughs that has caught on as monitor enclosures.
1. Can you get them shipped to you?
2. I hear they are relatively cheap also, is this true?

Thanks for reading through my long, ADD victimized post. Any input on the first part would be nice to see, and any input on the shipment of troughs would be very nice to see. Thank you.

About monitors in the time you've had your nile?

What's with the arboreal crap? A plywood box is a plywood box. It could never be arboreal.
OF COURSE you can have Timors. Just adjust your box.

You do seem to like the people-disdaining animals. You must also keep a cat. =) D.

Da Truth Aug 27, 2003 09:14 PM

I have learned, and BTW, i hate cats. There are levels of arboreal, and my enclosure doesnt fit the level needed for anything that loves to climb. I guess I could modify it to be a much taller enclosure, but i dont want to modify it. Really, the trough questions were exactly for that. I want to get some frilled dragons, and maybe have a few more setups for monitors and other lizards. For frilleds, i need height, and so i could build on top of the trough.

I do hate most people, so i guess i like things that share my disdain. I was just basically rambling off what i was thinking about, and my next move. Just feeling the croud out for some possible influence to go one way or the other. I would love ackies, but i like the look of timors more. I would like a monitor that is less than disdainful, however, i want something a little less known, yet priced relatively low.

again, i ramble ... oh well...

P.S. if you dont like my rambling, just dont read my posts. They are rare, im sure you can do it.

My 3 timors spend 99% of their time underground.
Not too sure about the arboreal thing, but I have a nice looking timor cage that looks empty most of the time because the animals are burrowed.

Same here Richard, nice cage , no monitors

They do spend lots of time underground, but mine likes to hang out high up sometimes. He always dives for cover when he sees me though.

bengalensis Aug 29, 2003 12:19 AM

My male is more viewable, however he does spend a considerable amount of time under ground with his girlfriend.

SHvar Aug 28, 2003 09:23 AM

I give him a high basking spot small trees and he basks when no ones around then goes underground. Nice cage setup, everybody asks "is there anything in there?".

LR-Reptiles Aug 29, 2003 12:53 AM

our timor spends all most all its time inside a bird house we put in the cage..very rarly does it come out. the picture is up on our site, very pretty lizard, but very un social

Hey Truth,

Let me just say this about the ackies vs the timors. Based on my experience you would be a lot happier with ackies. The timors are so secretive I hardly ever see them, EVER! I know they are alive because you see different cage arrangements every day and food is eaten. You can dig them up, catch them, and hold them with little trouble but you know they didn't want you to.

Ackies on the other hand............
There is nothing like a cute little monitor that comes running up to you to see whas's up and then takes off on his own little mission of sorts. What ever tends to be running through their little heads at the time. They spend a lot of time out interacting with each other, the environment, and you. They don't seem really fond of water though I have one that will jump into the air towards a stream of mist or tripod in a goofy way and close his eyes which is really a riot. I will try to get some pics.

Basically it boils down to this. Ackies are pure fun and a great window into monitor behavior. They don't hide behaviors like a lot of other species tend to. Sure a lot of people seem to have ackies, and I understand wanting something different. But there is a reason they are so popular. Cause they are so cool!

It's all up to you of course. If you are not fond of ackies then no matter how cool they are it won't make you happy. You have to look at that too. "What blows your skirt up" so to speek LOL!!

Later, Gene

this is when they were still babies. I need some new pics!

Da Truth Aug 28, 2003 08:07 AM

well, I must say, I will most likely go ackies. I was looking for a post from someone who has both. Thank you very much. My GF will be buying me the ackies probably in november at the philadelphia show. That is, if I see ones that are worth taking, but im sure I will.

Thanks again for the help.

I have the perfect monitor for you. A WC adult male tri-colored monitor. Man that would fit you to a tee. F

Da Truth Aug 28, 2003 01:49 PM

I'll get one.

But seriously, i see the point that my rout is definitly the road less traveled for a reason. That is why i am going with ackies. Never will I ever go into the WC deal again.

Speaking of, There is a pet store my way that carries a few monitors. They have a nile that they swear is CB, and that they get them all year round. The guy told me that they have a supplier in florida somewhere. You being yourself, and being a breeder, have you heard of anything like this with niles. It was my understanding that breeding niles is almost non-existant because of the gigantic amout of cheap WC niles out there. Same reason savs are not the first monitor on the list to be captive bred. I have seen a few pictures of niles copulating, and heard of them being bred, but i have never heard of an all year breeding assault of niles. I was just wondering your take on this. I personally think someone is either flat out lying, or someone is incubating WC eggs, so they are captive born.

They also have a white throat, and a timor.

FR Aug 28, 2003 02:31 PM

while there may be an occasional, very occasional breeding of these monitors, there is no continued program to breed them. And for the reasons you mentioned.

Why these people lie or were lied too, is most likely the same reason many people lie. Cause they want too. F

Bloodbat Aug 28, 2003 06:29 PM

I bred niles back in 2000, but only had 1 egg hatch (not so hot a result). Eventually lost both parents. I then lost the rest of my adult niles earlier this year (or was it last year) when they died in someone else's care far away from their home. Others have bred them as well, but it does tend to be sporadic. You pretty much pegged the reasons why (though I quit mostly because my salvators took the place of my niles and I can only handle one species of large monitor at the moment). I still have the one that hatched (April 13, 2001).

It would not surprise me if those CB niles are actually just wild caught in Florida. As has been noted on this forum and other places, there are large numbers of niles running around and establishing themselves in Florida. For someone with some time and effort, it probably would not be difficult to harvest niles year round. They could potentially even have it going on near their home or in their yard/property. A more... idealistic... individual might use that as justification to call them CB. More likely, they are just flat out lying about them being CB or anything along those lines.

I just wish I could see that more often!

SHvar Aug 28, 2003 09:36 PM

That are less than $5 a piece, and other invasive species cheap that he says he can go into his back yard and catch easily. Interesting...
