Tip-O-Texas Last week.

RioBravoReptiles Feb 25, 2008 05:59 AM

.. these days, herping down here is mostly trash-diving (my least favorite kind of herping).. We're in such a rush to develop every last scrap of dirt there is a de-facto war on nature going on. No property is allowed to sit idle. And now, with the new federal funding for flood control in play MILES of established habitat along canals are turned into bare dirt DAILY..
.
I got this shot early one morning last week next to a canal where the machinery was working.. the poor guy tried to get away but didn't make it across the road..
.

.
I took the old truck down through the brush and got ahead of the dredges and trucks to an area with a couple of piles of plywood and dry-wall. They turned out to be ratsnake condos..
.

.

.

.

.

.
... almost every layer had a snake in it. Plus skinks, geckoes and chirping frogs.
.
These piles were substantial and located near the river. The area was right for seeing a few things more rare than ratsnakes so I decided to leave them and return with a friend to help so nothing would scoot into the grass while I was holding up the junk (has happened many times).
.
When we went out the next day everything was gone and only bare dirt remained.

Hey Gus,

Great post, and love the emoryi "meahllmorum" - my favorite South Texas snake. That is a terrible shame about their habitat, and them, being gone the next time you went out. It is truly a terrible thing to see, the rape of the land that is going on in South Texas - I've seen your area pretty recently, and it is definately the hardest hit area imho. The same is happening in my part of the scrub, up around Nueces/San Patricio/Jim Wells/Kleberg Counties. You are right - an "empty" lot of scrub-land is just an invitation to these people, to build a subdivision or a Walmart...

Recent sightings for me, in Nueces County: DOR checkered garter this evening, DOR atrox last week, live baby checkered garter under a board last week.

Spring is definitely trying to spring, I saw spider lillies blooming in Calhoun county today and yesterday, only one dor ribbon on the drive, one skinned atrox in Matagorda county, sheesh.

Very sad to hear Gus, I really need to make it down to see a margarita before they are gone. Those are some sharp rat shots, liking the last shot best. I really wish there was something that could be done to preserve more habitat there.

Where's the land conservancy groups when you need 'em? That really sux, Gus. Hate to see that habitat go. Some of the rarest animals are there too. Why isn't LE doing their thing there?
