Scrub python breeding

python2000 Feb 25, 2008 07:52 AM

Hi!
I can see a lot of CBB babyes on various classifieds, so that means that someone is really breeding amethistines.... Do you have any infos or liks regarding breeding care? How many of you successfully bred this species? Are they harder to breed than JCP's or GTP's?

Thank you for any help

Flavio

Hi Flavio –

Take this for what it’s worth (my observation) of the scrub situation – There are very, very few US breedings of any flavor of scrubs in a given year. I would really only trust that an animal is truly cbb if you buy it directly from the breeder or if you are sure of the origin of animal in question.

It’s hard for me to comment on the relative difficulty of breeding them vs. JCP’s – I’ve had a few successful JCP clutches and one successful scrub (Moluccan) clutch and to be honest the only real “difficulty” with my scrubs is that they’re big and they need big cages. Also, take into account most scrubs are import and imports, of any species, are less likely to breed in captivity than cbb animals whose parents bred in captivity.

Hope this helps, good luck with your scrub adventures, they’re great animals if cared for properly.

first of all, thank you for your time!

i wanted to know what is the cage size of your adult moluccans. In many sites it is explained that 4'x3'x2' cages may work well for a single adult for all his life. Is that true in your opinion? Thinking about 10-11' burmese or reticulated pythons that dimension is really too small... may be its different in scrub because of theyr slender bodies. What you think?

You're doing great job with your snakes! Keep it working!

Thank you again!

Hi Flavio –

Thanks and no problem, happy to offer what advice I can. I house my pair of adults in a 6’x 2’x 3’ (LxWxH) cage and they seem to do pretty well, although even a little bigger would be better. I personally think 4’ does not offer enough room for even one adult – I’m sure you could keep one in a cage that size without issue, but it really depends on what the intentions are with the animal (Display? Pet? Breeding?). For what I’m trying to do (display and breeding), I really need to give them some space to move. You’re right about them not needing as much floor space as a burm or retic of the same length – but even as adults, they really do like to climb.
