I got a Veiled Chameleon, what is the scientific name for them.

Also i just purchased a Screen cage, only could afford 22 gallon at the moment but one day i want a 260 gallon. Anyways what would u recommend putting in it for a veiled, any type of specific fake grass?

Also i got a lamp on it for that heat thing, but do i also need to put the UV on it?

Sounds like you need a lot of basic information. To answer your questions ASAP here are some good cham care sites. Check out www.adcham.com, www.chameleonjournals.com, and www.chameleonnews.com. They will answer your lighting and temp questions and give you advice on setting up your cham's cage. It is best to set up the cage BEFORE bringing your cham home so you can check to see it works the way you want it to. Then if after reading these sites you have more specific questions ask away.

I do not know if you had posted before, as I didn't look below...but...Your chameleon has metabolic bone disease/calcium deficency. Is he kept indoor? if so, what inds of lights is he under, and what brand vitamin /mineral supplements is he getting. His bowed legs show he is having problems metabolizing Calcium.

Your cham has MBD.
You need to get him turned around right away or he will not live.
He needs to have a good source of UVB, sunlight is the best but you can buy reptile bulbs. He also needs calcium. My cham is also recovering from MBD and I give my guy a liquid calcium. It is cheap and works great.
If you need anymore information please ask!

What makes u say he has MBD?

Carlton Aug 28, 2003 11:17 AM

It is very POSSIBLE he has MBD based on the look of his legs in the pics. His legs are not straight and the joints look bowed. However, without a good herp vet exam, xrays, and blood work to check for calcium/phosphorus balance we can't be sure if it is a relict from past poor care (we don't know how long you've had him or where you got him), ongoing disease, or hereditary problems (there are a lot of sick little veileds out there). Regardless, your cham needs a vet exam and tests to determine his body calcium level. Its not as simple as giving a bunch of calcium over the counter. He will need careful correct lighting, basking outdoors regularly, correctly gutloaded feeders, and he may do just fine. Please read the good nutritional info on www.herpnutrition.com before dosing him with anything. Also, the other sites I listed earlier should give you info on the type of lighting etc. he'll need regardless. Go to www.herpnutrition.com. Don't panic, this is treatable and he may not get any worse if you deal with it now.
