Video of Courting Kingsnakes

waspinator421 Feb 25, 2008 07:57 PM

I took this video of my California Kingsnakes courting about 2 weeks ago. The male did something goofy at the end.

I'd do the EXACT same thing if someone barged-in on me while I was trying to "court" a female..LOL!

LOL! I'll have to get him a "dummy hand" to get him in the mood next time.

Hi Aubrey,

Great video! It looks like the female wasn't quite in the mood yet and when she tried to escape, the male got a little aggressive (with your finger, no less!). I like your non-reaction to the bite...calm and steady.

My california kings usually hook up within a half an hour and stay that way for 3-5 hours. You couldn't pry them apart if you wanted to. Two of my females mated this past week, but I didn't think to have a camera ready.

Happy Mating!

Thanks! Well, whether or not she was in the mood he did have his way with her shortly after this video. Unfortunately I wasn't recording anymore by then.

Congrats on your two females mating! Lets hope for a great year!

Poor guy! He looks so confused...

I noticed that all visible racks had ONLY a water dish.

Yikes! Please have a heart and think what you'd feel like in a cage with nothing to amuse you. They need rough edges for shedding, hide spots, and things to delight & intrigue them.

Just like we do.

When I see the "sweaterbox" or "rack" setups like yours, I almost weep. It's the equivalent of placing humans in a closet, and then expecting them to remain active & healthy.

My Baja king has 7 major hiding spots in his 60-gallon vivarium. He spends much time exploring & patrolling. He gets to exercise outside at times, too!

I appreciate your concern for my animals. All of my snakes do have at least one hide spot. I had removed them in the Cal King tub so it wouldn't get in the way of my recording. You can clearly see one (in the video) in the lower tub with the MSP Thayeri in it when the female goes over the edge of the tub. They love hanging out in their humid hides, and it does wonders for their skin.

Here is a pair sitting on top of one of the hides:

And here is another pair (same male) sitting inside a hide. I removed the lid to take their picture:
