First ball python

I am getting my first ball python, what type of substrate should I use?

You'll get a lot of answers depending on the preference of the poster (and this gets asked all the time). Personally I use the coconut fibers that are packaged like a brick. It looks nice and natural (looks like dirt) and it holds humidity. Poop and urates don't stick to it and dries it out pretty well. A lot of people on the other hand prefer either aspen shavings and Cypress mulch. Go with what looks good to you.

I use Aspen bedding (shavings) for both of my snakes. Whatever you do, DO NOT use Cedar! It's toxic and will kill your snake. Period. Good luck!

I also would advise not to use pine. Although the jury is still out on this one, it's better to be safe than sorry.
