Your Uro's length and weight?

samoID Feb 26, 2008 05:45 AM

I just want to ask you how big and heavy your Uros are?
Mine is about 23 cm long (cca. 9 inches) and weights 121g, is this healthy ratio, should she put on some weight?

i'm a bit scared she might be too skinny, because i don't see her eating and all those posts about dehydration make me wonder.
well, in her fecals there are lots of seeds (white millet) but i think she's skipping greens meals :/

You don't know the numbers or you won't tell?

Few probably actually weigh their uros on a routine basis, or even have a gram scale. I don't weigh any of my herps to be honest. I thought about a gram scale, but never delved too deep. Since you do have numbers for your uro, you may want to check with uro guides available in your local pet shops, etc. Some web sites have stats on uro size/weight. I let the animals physical appearence be my guide. My uro stays "full" looking even when not feeding as heavily like during this past winter. It hasn't ever showed signs of dehydration/emaciation.

Even if people do post, it really won't help you much. It will vary greatly species by species (few others have Indian uros to compare with), and even with individuals within a species. Hardwicki are naturally very long and slender compared with other species. Look at the base of the tail - it should be meaty and thick. The "thighs" should be chunky. That will tell you more than numbers from other people.

If you're really concerned about the uro (and sometimes those feelings are totally valid even if you can't identify why), have a vet take a look at him and see what he says. Or if you don't want to take him in, you can get a fecal check done. An overload of parasites might be causing him to be thinner than he should be.

Thanks for advice...
well fecal test was done when i got this cute little creature (it weighted 28g back then, 121g now) it was negative.
and i took her to the vet 3 weeks ago to clip her nails and i asked how she looks..he said she looks in perfect health (she's not skinny). but i'm concerned because she's not very active...wait, let me go take a photo and upload it here.
well anyway, inactive condition concernes me, she's in the cool side of the tank all day :/

the uro being on the cool side alot is NOT normal... that sounds like you should be worried. My uros have always been on the hot side for almost the whole day! they should be in 105-125 F temps. and then maybe hide on the hot side or in the middle but never in the cool side... until night time.

Yeah, I could post my big female mali's weight but I don't have exact length and she had eggs too so it's not gonna help. I have a baby egyptian i could post the weight and length if you want let me know

yea post it please...
well, today after bath, i put her in the middle of the tank and she went straight to her basking rock, lay down on it with her belly and remained there for about 20 min, then moved under it.

i think i will add one more hide tomorrow when i get back from work in the middle of the tank, maybe temps there will work out better for her.
winter is coming to an end, maybe her attitude will change...

You take it to the vet to have it's toenails clipped?? What, do you think you've got a reptilian POODLE?? Give me a quick break!!

samoID Feb 28, 2008 01:52 AM

yea, i took her to the vet...you know, i'm not an expert in doing that, besides, vet did it for free, so what's the harm?
i rather be sure for her nails to be cut properly than screw something up on my own

Right on... It's better to be an overprotective mommy than a neglectful mommy! Plus Vets will compliment you! they always tell me how they LOVE seeing reptiles that are well cared for b/c usually when people bring them in it's b/c they don't know how to care for them well. My vets have always told me that I have some of the best cared for lizards they've seen brought in... and that I'm a "neurotic mom" ha ha that's a true quote too! he hee

My point wasn't why you take your lizard to a vet for toenail clippings. It was towards why you get them clipped in the first place. How does this practice benefit your Uro?

orangudan Feb 28, 2008 10:37 PM

Nails that do not get worn down can over grow, that could cause joint problems, etc. I have seen nails on lizards grow right around into a circle and start to grow into the foot. Besides, a free trip to the vet is never really a bad idea is it?

Dannyboy9 Mar 02, 2008 06:46 PM

Guess that's all good & well. Just never have known a situation where nail clipping was necessary in all the Uros we've kept. We have a house full of them & tending their nails seems on the rediculous. Whatever floats your boat but, I think you're being anal.
Dan.

el_toro Feb 28, 2008 11:43 PM

I've wondered if species doesn't have something to do with how the nails grow. I've not ever needed to clip any of the malis nails, but I have to keep a watch on the ornates even though they all have the same type of rock to climb around on. I clip the ornates' nails before the toes begin twisting to the sides - a couple times a year, maybe?

hmm.. that's an interesting point. I used to have a huge female mali and I never had to cut the nails, but i Have seen ornates at our rep "zoo" that have had longer nails..

yeah, I never clip my uro's or beardies nails b/c they like to climb!! the uros not as much but when i let them out to run round the room or outside (theyre fast!) i'm always surprised that they DO like to climb! If you cut the nails they can't have an much fun!

... and yes i'm the girl who's had her beardies get stuck up in trees... TWICE!! yeah.. ha ha it sucks lol don't let it happen to you..
