strange frozen mice

mldolan Feb 26, 2008 06:13 PM

when i fed my snake a frozen mouse i got from the pet store a couple of days ago i noticed something strange, the mouse was gutted. maybe they do it for sanitary reasons but it seems to me that those guts might contain some nutrients that a snake might need. is this common of all frozen mice and rats?
thanks
Mike

No.....thats not common. Use a reputable supplier like rodent pro. You will get quality feeders at a great cost.Depending on how many snakes you have they can be alot cheeper than buying from a pet store. Shipping charges usually run pretty high, but if you are buying 100 mice or more you'll end up much better. I have 13 ball pythons and I usually buy about 30 med rats and 50 large mice. I also have a small rat breeding group for my picky eaters that only want live. Goto the website and play with the quantities and find whats best for you. If you only have a few snake you could breed your own for next to nothing.

and if you don't have enough snakes to be able to fill a box from rodent pro-- look around for people in your area that get from them and you can go in with them.
We are constantly looking for people to go in with us on a box-- usually they only need 1-2 bags of something and if we get 2-3 people- the shipping is like nothing per person!

but- yha- the gut is where the vast majority of the nutrients are-- that is very strange!!

Most of a mouse's fat is in its gut cavity, as are the remains of anything it ate - and all the vitamins that contains.

Snakes require the nutrition of whole prey. If your petshop is selling gutted mice - find a new petshop.

That mouse was probably "gutted" already before it was frozen. I can't tell you how many times I came into the store in the morning to find half mice, gutted mice, or almost entirely cannibalized mice. The supplier probably just dumped the whole tank of mice into the freezer along with the one that was half eaten by the other mice. But yeah, you got screwed on that one.
